ID on this wheel, please!

As pat of my job,I spend a lot of time raking round scrapyards.

A few days ago, I found a wheel and an engine at one. I know what the engine is, but feel free to confirm. 😉

However, the wheel is a different matter. Can anyone identify what it may have come off? The only info I have about it is that it came from a “vintage tractor parts” auction at Crimond, Aberdeenshire, a few years ago.

Nearest wartime airbases were HMS Merganser at Crimond (primarily Barracuda), RAF Peterhead and Fraserburgh (Mustang, Warwick), Banff (Mosquito, Beaufighter), and Dallachy (Beaufighter). I know Dallachy played a part in the Lancaster raid on the Tirpitz, too.

As far as I know, there were no Lancaster or Manchester crashes in the area, although there were a couple of Wellingtons went down in Macduff and Huntly.

It looks to me like an Avro design wheel hub, and the lack of tread on the tyre leans me towards a Manchester rather than a Lancaster. I’m not aware that there were Manchesters in the area at all, but could be wrong! The photos I can find of Wellingtons show a similarity, too.

Lack of provenance, of course, means the wheel could have come from anywhere.

Anyway … here’s the photo I took. I’m going out there again tomorrow and aim to get more.

Thanks for any suggestions! 🙂

Not really, I just googled “surviving GNSR coaches” out of curiosity. It appears to be a “known” survivor. 🙂

Yes, looks to me like a Johnson 6 wheel non-corridor third, with 5 compartments. 98 built 1893-95, withdrawn 1931-46…;)

😮

Serious Respect!

Wow – Those two coach bodies are extremely interesting… 😮

The larger of the two bears a resemblance to an LNER bogie type, whilst the smaller (formerly 6-wheeled) one reminds me of a GNSR type, although without a comparable image I cannot be 100% certain.

What is certain is they are of great interest, and are definitely worthy of preservation!

Thanks for posting the photos. 🙂

Thank goodness for that, it isn’t only me!

I wondered if the older one was LNWR, with the location it is more likely to be GNSR. Still on it’s underframe too

Wheel i/d

Yes, Warwick looks a likely candidate also.

The tyre size will be the decider – unless Lanc and Warwick were the same.

More pics, plus one of a Warwick with lifeboat attached.

Could that not be a Warwick wheel, then? It would be a lot more likely up here … given that Warwicks operated out of Crimond, where the wheel was sourced.

The Derwent was apparently used at Aberdeen Airport for many years, strapped to a wagon and used to clear ice from the runway! 🙂

I`ve not seen that many `bald` tyres, that size in the U.K…and this one looks in good condition Peter. There are a few scrap yards in the South West that still have wartime stuff in locally, which have been quite fruitful, but they tend to be in `the sticks`

There are quite a few bald type tires around… granted not as many as the treaded versions..

I read elsewhere that “slick” Lancaster tyres are somewhat uncommon – a report on the salvage of one that crashed in the Highlands says the slick tyre they found there is the only one in existence.

The rest of the site has various curiosities, mostly vintage tractors and various more modern vehicles, apparently used in supplying stock cars. An interesting tall, slim beacon at the gate, too, which I must ask the guy what it is.

We have a few of these sites up here (Aberdeenshire), where old guys have been collecting scrap for years … it makes my job very interesting because I never know what I’m going to find, often in places I’ve driven past dozens of times before I become aware of them (because they’ll be behind trees, or just over a rise or whatever). This one is actually less than 10 miles from where I live. 🙂

A few weeks ago someone complained about an “illegal scrappy” and it turned out the guy was actually a collector of old heavy machinery from the Clyde and Aberdeen shipyards – he also had a steam road-roller rusting away in his garage. Farm inspections also turn up all manner of oddities squirelled away in barns -countless vintage cars for a start. Last week I found three old Bond Minicars in a field. Great fun.

Lovely wheel but it looks like a lot of the casting has corroded away. 🙁

Wouldn’t mind a wander around the rest of the site, though!

Would you be kind enough to take a picture of the railway carriage in the top right of your first picture too please?

Richard

Will do my best tomorrow when I’m out there. I’ll also take better pics of the wheel, and report back accordingly. 🙂 Thanks for replies so far …
