ID required on a Spitfire

One for the Spitfire enthusiasts out there.

When I was a kid during the later half of the 1970’s we would year after year used travel from the midlands down to Bournemouth for our annual holliday. The route that my dad travelled took us through the cotswolds, marlborough, swindon, salisbury.

According to my dad at one of these locations there used to be a factory we passed by and apparantly there used to be a Griffon engined Spit on the gate or certainly on the site which was viewable from the road.

Any ideas which Spit this was and is it still around? and any pics of it at the site mentioned?

Regards PP

Its amazing, now, to think of Spitfires used as gate guards, just left out in all weathers, probably not many people caring for them. In away it was nice, it reflected a period in which they didn’t have massive monetary value applied to them, and when the MoD didn’t see fit to turn every possible asset into money. Good to see that one is still in RAF care though.

Well, IIRC I read in an old FlyPast that this aircraft suffered an engine faillure and managed to glide back to base at an impresside gliding ratio.
