RE: ID time
Its so funny to think that Heathrow once looked like that when you see it now!
I personlly wouldn’t have a clue where it was as I’m far too young and was years away from even being around back then 🙂 .

RE: ID time
Sadsack,
I was convinced it was Heathrow. I visted there in 1968 when I was seven and that’s how I remembered it. Got any more photos?

RE: ID time
I was teasing. They are a pair of postcards I picked up last year, dated 1960, both are Heathrow. Wanted to get some discussion going!

RE: ID time
Thank you Keith!
Never noticed the Britannia, suppose I was too excited looking at three Constellations! Weren’t those Ambassadors a superb looking aircraft?
Looking at the building and the people it definitely looks like late fifties or very early sixties. Do you think it possible that the people on the roof terrace are actually standing on the first incarnation of the Queen’s Building at Heathrow? The sheds in the background look very reminiscent of those where Terminal 4 now stands to me. Anyway, what other UK airfield could have sustained such activity at that period in history?

RE: ID time
Ok Boys – it’s definately UK. Top Photo – 3 Constellations and what looks like a Britannia in the background. Foreground left to right, DC-6, Viscount, Ambassador, Viscount and in the middle distance a DC-3. The Large Van in the foreground is a Commer.
In the second photo, Airspeed Ambassador on the left with a Stratocruiser on the right. The Ambassadors were operated by British European Airways and called “Elizabethans”. The big truck in the centre next to the Ambassador is an AEC Regal, so this is almost certainly the UK.

RE: ID time
I was trying to establish by the groud equipment what continent it was, but I couldn’t tell. Looks a bit more European. I can’t see where the drivers are sitting though to see if it is the UK.
I may be wrong, but the aircraft in the far left of the photo (sorry don’t know the model) looks like a vintage Air Canada. Air Canada adopted the maple leaf very early. Like I said though, I may be wrong and reading more into the image than what is there.
Great photos!

RE: ID time
The 1st picture looks to me like it could be Terminal 1 at Heathrow in the 1950’s. I think the aircraft are Constellations and a Viscount in the distance (would those buildings be the Hunting and Fairey sheds?) and in the foreground I think a DC-6, Viscounts, a DC-3 and an Airpeed Ambassador.
2nd picture is a Stratoliner/Stratocruiser and another Airspeed Ambassador? Probably wrong, but never mind.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-09-02 AT 11:46Â AM (GMT)]Well, I’d say it’s in the 50’s, I can see Constellations, a DC-3, a Boeing Stratocruiser (presumably from BOAC), a Handley Page Herald, DC-6s, but I should check.
I’d also say the pics were taken in Britain

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-09-02 AT 12:00 PM (GMT)]Where did you find these pics Sadsack, or are they from your own personal collection? 🙂
In the top picture, the four proped a/c could be Douglas DC-6B’s, Vicker Viscounts, Lockheed Electras or Bristol Britannias. More probably to be Viscounts. There is also a DC-3 in the background and a few Lockheed Constellations. 🙂
In the bottom picture there is a Stratocruiser
