Identify The Engine . . .

This is my son being employed as slave labour during his Summer Hols. No particular reason for the post other than that, but can anyone correctly ID the engine he is working on?

He is the one on the right, before anyone asks!

I was lowering one on an electric winch in the engine shop at RAF Bruggen and the mounting point crushed my finger between it and the stand when it jerked, in the following scream I let go of the winch control and it swung away from me, it felt like an eternity for it to swing back and for me to make a last ditch effort to grab the control box and winch the damn thing off my finger, one of them is still fatter and flatter at the tip because of it…..

Was the shortest job I ever had, a few months in a build shop when the Squadron disbanded before posting home……. rest of career was on Squadrons and indeed bar that short occasion, all of it was first line, I made sure of that

And the clincher was as they say staring me in the face. The phonic wheel just in front of your lad’s hands and the remnants of the NL Pulse robe in the exhaust diffuser could only be RB199.

It has taken some sort of a severe walloping though, are they bird remains all through it?

Correct!
Thanks for pointing out that was a phonic wheel, I had thought it was a dogging spline. It does resemble a bird-struck engine, but actually it was involved in a mid-air over the Wash, and as such is ideal for Joseph to experiment on.

Slave labour nothing mate. That laddie is gaining valuable experience from his labours and you should be grateful that someone is giving him a chance to show his metal. There are kids screaming out for a start in the Aviation Industry.

Definitely a bypass engine, RB199?

The one piece intermediate casing with machining marks has the Module 16 mount/drive in about the right place. It also has the engine mounting pins of the right type and in the right place. The Boroscope Access points look very similar to Turbo Union standard items and from many hours doing 25 hour checks are in the right places if I remember rightly.

One thing is for sure though, if he turned up for duty in those denims on a shift I ran he would have been in for a flea in his ear! Going for the patent leather look is all well and good (and it keeps the rain out after a while) but unless he has a No Dhobi chit off the MO he would be off to the NAAFI for a box of Daz!

Jim, not entirely sure whats wrong with your eyes. It looks like a gas turbine to me  Washing the dishes at your house must be interesting

My initial thoughts were “Spey” but its much too small for that.

BS Viper? Something of that size 🙂 My knowledge of eastern turbojets is limited to nil
