I picked a piece of aircraft recently from around one of the old dispersal points at binbrook and trying to work out what type of a/c it was from.
What i have cleaned so far i have found the following markings
In a oval disc r3 3ck or 3gk
In a round disc 35k
and a number 4z1321
Ita a piece of L shaped alloy around 6 inches long with a nut and bolt either end plus riveted to it looks like some kind of strip to fasten a cable or something.
Cant upload pics at moment as pc being silly.
Hope someone can identify the maker for me as keep finding pieces laying around the ploughed field.
Thanks in advance

According to the Lancaster Spares Parts List, your piece is part of a single Sea Marker Stowage of the type shown here, Part No. 4/Z.1321 being described as “ANGLE, base”.
I wouldn’t mind betting that the same part, with the same number, also appeared in the Lincoln.

Since i posted this i have found out that the r3 is for avro but for which type of aircraft would this have came from.
I know there were lancasters based there but not definate if it is from a lancaster till i can identify of the other serial numbers.
Thanks again.

Thank you for that .
Looking at the part i described as a cable fastener it is definately what remains of a hinge .
Where exactly would this be fitted on a lancaster and what marks would this be fitted on.
Many thanks for your help.

Once again many thanks for your quick response.
I shall try and clean up the other parts i have to see if they are lancaster as it might end up being a crash site but it is on a area which was once a lancaster dispersal which has now been dug up.
I dont know if any lancasters crashed there so will have to start digging through some history of the airfield .
Thanks again air ministry

I checked the part no. in the Spare Parts list for the Lancaster B Mk. X, but that was simply because it was easier to access than my copy of the list for the Lancaster B Mk. I/III.
I expect it would be common across the various Marks.
As for situation, they were forwards of the mid-upper turret at around the point where the bomb bay ends. There were stowages on both sides of the fuselage walls.

It was certainly a way from the domestic site going towards the other side of the airfield. I can’t be more specific now. That was back in ’77. I was posted to ASF, did a short stint on the teams then into the tank bay.

Hi robert.
I dont suppose you can remember where abouts the wreck was laid can you.
I have seen a picture of a white painted lancaster fuselage that was once placed there but that was near the hangers unless they moved it.
The piece was found by the old b flt dispersals (Basically the ones on road to q shed from crash gate 1) and i also found a merlin exhaust gasket there last year.
Out of interest what years were you stationed there and what part of the station was you based in ?

When I was at Binbrook there was a wreck of an AVRO Lanc/Lincoln on the base area. I did visit it once but I can’t be more specific as to type or reason it was there.

The following is a possibility;
On 7th March 1944, Lancaster ME646 blew up at dispersal, 0145 hrs, after an armourer had decalared the DA fuse on the 4,000 lb cookie safe!
Lancaster JA687 was severely damaged and written off. No injuries.

Thank you for that avro.
Some usefull info there.I have made a list of seriel numbers of lancasters that either crashed/Crash landed or exploded at binbrook to try and see if any were on or around the dispersal area in mention.
Have tried to find 460 sqn orb to see what is mentioned but it is no longer available on the naa website so dont know how i might be able to view it .
I shall start up a seperate thread with a list of possible lancasters to see if i can find out any more information or any pictures to find out some more detailed information on where they crashed.
Thank you again all for helping me out with information

Binbrook,
Try Googling “Peter Dunn 460 Sqn”. You may get some info there.
My money is on ME646, though.

Its still there – or was five minutes ago. Look for
“Unit history of number 460 Squadron – January 1944 to October 1945”
Its a digitised copy.
