Just a quick question I don’t know if anyone will know. In the 1970’s whilst I was a member of the ATC on a visit to Lyneham base there was a static jet fighter/trainer on the base I remember getting to sit in it with the caution do not touch the red button. Anyone know which aircraft this was?

Thunderbird,
Great, good info, but do you have any dates?
It was certainly at Monkton Farleigh in 1989

I will see if I can find the details of when it moved. From memory at the time, officially it was only moved for restoration however Defence Sales intervened once everything was underway and a deal was done for it to be disposed of by Private Treaty.

Thinking back now it must have been around 1971/72 when I was in the ATC so early 70’s. Now Monkton farleigh that was an interesting place to look round (the underground bunkers stretch for 30 miles and it has it’s own underground railway).

WF825 went from Lyneham to the Avon Aviation Museum at Monkton Farleigh from there it went to Yatesbury along with the Javelin

The Meteor was certainly there by 1987, but I can’t recall when it departed. I think this is the aircraft that was stored in a field in Yatesbury village, along with a Javelin some time later.
Lyneham had a Hunter also at about this time (1986/7), and various airframes (Vulcan, Victor, Nimrod AEW) which were scrapped/burned before 1994.
Finally (and I really doubt this one fits the bill), there was a Pakistan AF Shenyang Fantan (ex-Martin Baker) in Air Cargo for a while.

And what year was this supposed fast jet (sic) event at Lynham. 70’s/80’s?
I know my kids always tell me that I was never there (2500hrs in Fat Alberts 76-83) but all I do remember is a Varsity on the burning dump.
Very interesting!

So we agree that Meteor Flight’s T7 WF825 WAS at Lyneham.
No-one mentioned WA591 before Post #5.

Yeah, what about post #2 ??
I am saying it was WF825 as I was there and have the photo ( somewhere )to prove it was WF825,.
Also Meteor Flights T7 WA591 and was at Woodvale. I was also one of the founder members of Meteor Flight and we had WF825 in our collection.
It was def not WA591 that was at Lyneham.
