If Barton closes, no GA in Manchester!

In this months Mag, one of the comments was. If Barton closes, there will be no GA in Manchester,

What about Manchester international?

There are a number of light aircraft, plus Manchester School of flying based
at egcc.
Later this summer, M.S.F. will be opening there new facilities at a purpose
built site, next to the aviation viewing area. This amenitie will be avalabel
to all GA and visitors.

The airport offers 24/7 flying from two long concrete runways. (even I can
look competent landing on them)

So No GA in Manchester if Barton closes………I don’t think so.

Well the landing fee for G.A singles at Manchester sits at I think about £40 last time I checked, this alone is quite a rate, im sure the flying school at Manchester gets it cheaper due to the fact that they are based there. The same is true about Birmingham they have slowly killed of G.A, Birmingham had 13 G.A singles at one point, now there are two, a cessna and a saratoga.

I personally can’t see Barton closing, I think there will be to much demand for it to stay open, then again thats just an educated guess.

ALSO: Take a look at my latest reply in “Nav run for your life” I have posted an article that needs reading, maybe CPLS/CFIS should take a look at it!

Having been to both in the last month I think it would be a big dissaster for GA in this country if Barton closed. Apart from a few strips that would only leave Blackpool as GA friendly in the NW. MAN may be ok for the flying schools but most of Bartons residents are PFA types and microlights best at home on grass. I can’t somehow seeing a 747 at the hold waiting for a flexwing to land! Hopefully it will be open for many years to come. A usefull addition though would be a GA field in the Stoke area.
On a similar point I see Southampton have backtracked on evicting their GA residents. They originally said they needed the room for scheduled services, although the place seems empty whenever I go there!

Unfortunately the way of these things is that the larger airports, with their eyes on profit and customer satisfaction (quite rightly), inevitably try (or suceed) in squeezing out GA.

Even if they do not, are miles of concrete, jobsworths, full atc, hi-viz jackets, interminable taxying and prolonged holds really your idea of GA fun?

I know different things appeal to different people but….
