If No "Dambusters",What Could Be Made?

Following on from the latest Dambusters thread, there was a suggestion to start a new one with ideas for previously “Unknown” or “Unmade” stories.

So far we had Amiens raid & Copenhagen Gestapo raid.

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your wish list…..

“Goshawk Squadron” by Derek Robinson. Make it a properly dark and menacing film mirroring the scenes the book portrays. No Red Baron, good show, biff the boshe, chivalrous acts or Yank actors. Just young, dishevelled, demoralised and and generally unlikeable characters, led by an extremely horrid C.O.

Thoughts??

This. Plenty of SE5a replicas kicking about, too. Perhaps someone should pitch it to Peter Jackson??

P.S. I’d like to see something on the story behind the R101: the greedy politicians, glory-seeking Ministers, the questionable Certificate of Airworthiness and the put-upon aircrew who had to pilot the rotten thing.

Merkle.

If you ever seriously wanted to write a book, then an Uncle on the POW would be a good starting point for one.

Dont think the Repulse/Prince of Wales is a goer as it would show what a bunch of poratts the RN top brass were at the time and probably no ships left that would fit the bill for filming..Esmond VC would probably fail for the same reason even though it SHOULD be made.

My Uncle was on the POW 😮

and was there ever a book written about the Taranto raid… Now that would be action packed 🙂

“Schnaufer”.

“Tempsford” (Lysander ops).

“Visible for 100 Miles – The Lubeck Raid”.

Amiens Prison Raid Movie

Some darn good suggestions here for sure….but what material is ready for some good director & writer to craft a great story on this amazing chapter of history from WW II ! No need to change anything history wise…just the tick of the clock on these French underground people about to be executed by the Germans ………… and the quick action of the RAF to come up with some amazing low level bombing tatics to free them from prison ! Having been there last summer and seeing the prison for myself up close ..what an amazing feat of airmen ship by the RAF!!

Sorry Daz – it’s been done – for a TV film back in 1956 (when I was 10 :)) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0496777/ – it starred Pete Murray (the DJ/Actor) – it was quite good for the time, probably wouldn’t be acceptable these days!!

Life was in black and white in those days as nobody had a colour TV!!

cheers

Allan

Yeah…. but if you do it in this day and age… Mmm, Spitfire porn*…! 😉

(*OK, and some Buchon stuff, too!)

Didn’t they have some terrible plans for the male populace if the invasion was successful (mass exterminations to crush resistance) or is that just a fable?

Well there was a list of ” undesirables” that would have been picked up and disappeared and i seem to remember that there were plans to deport suitable males to workcamps…after segregrating suitable children for indoctrination. The end plan was to ” eliminate” the non-germanic male in a relatively short number of years

The Last Enemy – Richard Hillary

The Last Enemy by Richard Hillary, although the chances of that being made are about as high as me being an Olympic athlete…*

(*Basically, the Hillary family would not part with the film rights unless the resulting production stuck closely with the events described in the book – and how likely is that going to happen?)

What about the invasion that didnt happen? Sealion would make a fascinating “what if it had happened ”

Shooting Script by Gavin Lyall, no need for authenticity, B25, Vampires, girl et all you need, haven’t read it , you ain’t into B25s.

Or if you want a serious movie

Neville Shute, Round the Bend….anyone here actually read it?

Thought about this one as a film before – a very clever book that I didn’t get first time round – because I’m slow, I didn’t realise that Shute was deliberately writing like an emotional cripple while telling this first person story. It would work superbly as a movie if told from a different point of view.

And think about the lovely aircraft (not made up ones as per the story), but maybe some Airspeed thingies (for relevance to Shute’s own career), and a gathering of 30’s, 40’s and 50’s civvie types, in exotic locations. Loverley.

Oh, and a bloke who might or might not be the messiah. There is that, of course. (one, two, three…. “We are all different”)

Sealion..

What about the invasion that didnt happen? Sealion would make a fascinating “what if it had happened ” subject….imagine Tiger Moths fitted out with bomb racks, plenty of low level Spits and Hurris ..magic !

I’m not sure you have the idea that Dad’s Army was a comedy.
and not a military black comedy like MASH or Blackadder IV…
It really wasn’t about the war, it was more about a group of dissimilar men working together.
In this case, they were brought together by the war, but I’m sure it could have happened under other circumstances as well (say a police force or office…wow, there’s two more ideas for successful comedy shows 🙂 ).

As for anyone dying, their cause of death would be more likely from heart disease or lung cancer brought on by the eating and smoking habits of the time.

It ‘s more of Last of the Summer Wine than Patton.

A very good comparison !

It was after all a comedy and good comedy as well..but i think that it still managed to convey the fact that they would have fought, maybe not very effectively , but definately they would have fought.
