With regards to the Meteor F.8, it is not painting the whole picture to say that there are plenty of engines about. Yes, there are, but many of them are unusable as fliers because they have come off runway snow-blowers where their running hourse, etc., were not recorded. In the early days of Meteor Flight I was involved in discussions with Rolls-Royce about lifing policy of critcal components – especially the turbine – and it was not an easy problem to overcome. This was one of the reasons why both the RAAF and the Argentine Air Force each restored a Meteor to flying condition, but neither ever got off the grond – they were not able to source usable engines.

I reckon one of the various Tempest II projects that seem to be stalled in various places. Or perhaps more realistically, maybe one of the current crop of Mk. I Spitfire restorations?

My understanding was that Stephen Grey wouldn’t be allowed to fly the Beaufighter – something to do with the CAA setting an age limit for pilots in twin engined aircraft where there is only provision for a single pilot.
I believe the other obstacle is obtaining the correct mark of engines which were originally fitted to this Beaufighter.
If I have got hold of the wrong end of the stick then maybe someone with a better understanding of the situation could give an explanation.

As far as choosing an aircraft for The Fighter Collection to acquire my vote would be to stick with propeller driven but I couldn’t begin to choose one single aircarft even if the choice were limited to types either currently airworthy or currently available as a restoration project.

What if?

They should obtain and operate a Mk.8 Meteor – a real classic, if ever there was one.

I know TFC really only do piston types but the Meteor has been around for over 60 years and with it being the first jet in RAF service the Meteor day fighters are a totally unrepresented type.

There aren’t many airframes available now but the spares are plentiful, there are plenty of engines about, they are easy to fix and operate and are totally conventional in their construction and flying characteristics.

From having many hundreds of Mk.8’s to having almost none it has been a mystery to me why (apart from Winston) virtually no-one in the warbird community considered operating one these last 30 or so years.

It’s not too late now, though…:diablo:

There is also the question of what could the pilots fly.

Ask them,how are we to know LOL :).They buy and sell planes at times that i wouldn’t have thought they would’ve sold but further down the line another airframe appears.
Why would they buy another twin engined plane when they sold the other off [Tigercat] and can’t fly the Beaufighter in this country.
Some lovely surprises πŸ™‚ long may it continue.
