I’m a bit half and half about it. It was an interesting mix of contempory and archive film, apparently they used WW2 era German lenses to get the right mix. The film couldn’t make its mind up whether to be a film or documentary which gave it disjointed feel. Was interesting to see the BBMF Lanc pre mid upper turret. I would put the film as an interesting take on a soldiers experience, shame my Dad passed away as he went in in Sword beach and would have probably experienced the same sort of things portrayed in the film.

Wish I’d had the chance to see it…..BBC4 is, at best, a bit ‘sporadic’ around here (Freeview) and there seems to have been quite a lot of interest scheduled recently.

My take on the film is very similar to PanzerJohn’s. I’ve seen it a couple of times. It was a critical failure and has gained a bit of a cult following. I agree it is somewhat split between the archive and contemporary narratives and loses out overall..with a lack of direction and a rather sudden end. Certainly worth watching though.

I rather enjoyed it, not having seen it before.
Realised it was ‘old’ as soon as I saw a young Nicholas Ball (‘Hazel’:diablo:)
The aircraft footage was superb… = especially the Douglas Boston stuff
The Boston footage alone, made it worth watching.
(any links to where else THAT might be seen ?)
Nice to see ‘474 in the “old” days, in Nettleton’s markings & without the mid-upper, & still managing to look attractive.
