Ike – A & E

A & E’s latest made-for-TV movie has come out called, “Ike – Countdown to D-Day”.

I watched it tonight, and I found it to be a very good movie. Tom Selleck is very good playing the General, and there are some other very good portrayals of famous figures like Churchill and Montgomery.

I must admit I didn’t know much about Charles de Gaulle, but if his movie incarnation was anything like he was in real life, it wouldn’t surprise me.

He appeared to be a pompous, know-it-all, with little respect for the people who were fighting to liberate his country.

Americans, Britons, Canadians, Australians, and others gave their lives to rid Europe of tyranny, and all he seemed concerned about was reminding people that he was in control of French forces…

How can someone be so ungrateful?

De Gaulle aside, the movie is very good, and I think anyone with even a passing interest in the events leading up until D-Day will enjoy it.

By looking at the picture of Hasselhoff, I just found out I have more chest hair than him, must of been all that Bud Light I drink. I should show my hairs more often maybe I will get girls to swoon over me as well. 🙂

I think they should’ve used James Earl Jones to play Ike.

And he wore red swimming trunks?
Or did he go around getting beaten up every week whilst living in a trailer as a private eye?
Or was he always getting chased in his Trans-am by incompetant police?
Or…;)

A talking car? You referring to Night Rider? Lol. Boy if there was ever anything that has NOTHING to do with the movie I started this topic about that’s a good pick.

Wasn’t he a rugged-looking American bloke with a perma-tan?
They all look the same and sound the same to me, to be honest…

I dont remember too much about him I was just fascinated by the talking car, I was part of the show’s main target audience when it came out, kids under 10. 🙂

Has he got a talking car in this one?

I think you have your generals mixed up, General Hasselhoff had the talking car.

From what you have said I think the film makers probably got it about right regarding De-Gualle.
There was a series of TV programmes on the BBC in 2000 for the 55th anniversary of VE day and one of these focussed on the relationships between the allied leaders.
British intelligence regarded De-Gaulle as such a security liabilty in 42/43 that they gave serious consideration to having him fall victim to an “accident”.
Despite his intense personal dislike for the man Churchill refused to let the plot go ahead. If you read some of his writings regarding the actions of the post war French goverment under De-Gaulle it was a decision he later regretted.
