Il-2: Who Still Plays?

Just wondering who among you may play this amazing flight simulator. I got the latest (and I think final) version, Il-2:1946 sometime in 2007 I believe and I still fire it up fairly often. I don’t play online as many do, but I enjoy it just the same.

For those who do, which are your favorite airplanes?

I’d have to say my overall preferred mount is the P-40 series. I just like the way they fly. Good handling, great turning circle, good firepower (especially in the P-40E and P-40M models), great diving capabilities, and a good cockpit layout all combine to make the P-40 my best aircraft.

I’ve been practicing with the Hurricane variants a lot lately as well. Although slower and burdened with a poor rate of roll, I find their overall handling, turning circle, stalling characteristics (not nearly as prone to enter a spin as many other types), and overall firepower very good.

I love the twelve guns of the Hurricane IIB although I find that all too often I can’t get enough solid hits in before running out of ammo. Those Brownings spit those .303 shells out fast! The Hurricane IIC is absolutely devastating with its four 20-mm cannons and I find that patience is truly a virtue with it, as you can annihilate just about anything you can get into your sights.

My most recent mission with the IIC was a huge success. I set up an intercept with six Hurricane IIC’s against four Bf-109E-7/Z’s escorting four Ju-87B-2’s. I managed to knock out the Stuka leader and then at least three Bf-109’s though the game credited me with a fifth kill so perhaps I got all four? Either way it was fun. While engaging the second Bf-109, his wingman (no idea where my wing was at this point) began to hammer me with cannon and machine gun shells. One of my wing guns jammed, and in the ensuing fight, it was basically me latched onto the tail of one -109 with his wingman hammering me with machine gun rounds (he ran out of cannon ammo without scoring too many hits thankfully). I had a second gun jam due to more 7.92-mm rounds, but I was finally able to knock one of them down although I realized at some point I had an elevator shot away. My pitch control was weaker, but I managed to hang in there and finally get those last two Jerrie. 🙂

(For the record I am by no means bragging. I’d get my behind handed to me if I played online, so for my the computer A.I. is a pretty good challenge most of the time.)

So what say you all? Who plays, and what do you fly?

(For the record I have quite a few bombers I like to fly as well, and if the thread gets hits, I’ll go into those.)

RAAFVampire- I’ve been having the same trouble. I’ve sifted through the various Sturmovic forums, and it appears that it could be a sound card compatability problem. The latest patch, 4.09m, won’t work on my machine as it has a slightly older generation soundcard. You could try running the 4.08m version of the game and see if that runs. If so, it’s possible to then transfer a file from 4.08m to 4.09m that will make 4.09m run on your machine. Complex eh?

If 4.08m works, go to the Il2 1946 folder in program files and copy the file ‘mg_snd_sse.dll’ to somewhere like Desktop. Then install 4.09m and delete the new ‘mg_snd_sse.dll’, take the old one from desktop and put it in place of the one you just deleted. Make sense? 4.09m should then run with the old 4.08m sound file.

Just purchsed IL2-birds of prey for XBox 360 and it’s pretty darn good.
Excellent graphics and easy to play on the game console, however Saitek now have a XBox 360 compatible joystick which takes the game to a whole new player level along the line of PC gaming…..worth a look if you are into gaming consoles as well as PC flight sims.

Funny, this is what I’ve requested for Crimbo this year, as I’ve recently (as in TODAY!) invested in a 360 (see my Heroes over Europe thread).

I’ve just installed 4.09m, and now the game won’t run. I’m on Windows XP, and the update was installed in the usual il21946 folder in program files. When I click on the desktop icon to start the game, it comes up on Windows Task Manager as normal for a few seconds, and then disappears.

Any ideas??

I have heard that you must not install into programs as in needs to write config files.Create a games folder.

Yes, of course, this is quite an important point!
For example, this is the path for my installation:
C:/Games/IL2 Modded

Unfortunately, even though Win7 has a Program Files(x86) folder dedicated to 32bit programs, IL2 does not like being installed there!

No instant success.

As Miggers posted. “This guy is your teacher;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G60fP6EPZIo

His gunnery is superb.”

I think he may have the setting “no instant success” turned off in IL2. You have to get a lot more rounds into an aircraft to to that much damage with “realistic gunnery” and “no instant success turned on”. With “no instant sucess” turned off, any rounds on target will immediately disable the enemy aircraft.

Creative firing angles though.

Fav plane

I play online using HPLBY, I do not play often as I am an AH2 addict.

But when I do play I fly the F4U-1C with 20mm cannons. High speed, good turning circle, stable gun platform and heavily armed. In short AWESOME.

I use the full mission builder and make HUGE battle of britain dogfights or GIGANTIC European bomber raids and those are fun if not impressive.

Yes indeed it does.
Running Windows 7 Ultimate here, installed fairly straightforwardly.
The main thing to do is not install from autorun, but explore the disc and run ‘a.exe’. You may or may not need to run it in XP compatibility mode.

If you run into any problems drop me a PM and i’ll try to help!

I’ve played all incarnations of IL-2 since the demo in 2000/1(?). Though more recently my passion has been re-ignighted with the fantasitc MODS that AA develop. I highly recommend U.I. 1.2, for more info visit here http://allaircraftarcade.com/forum/

Hmm, think I might jump in a Spitfire Mk.XIV… :D:D

Many thanks, sounds good to me. It will be a Christmas present so if I need to get back to you it will be after the festivities!:):)

To all of you IL enthusiasts the more I rad the more I like. So can anyone confirm whether or not it will run on windows 7 64bit? I have been unable to find a clear, definitive answer.

Well the P-47 wasn’t really the best turning fighter of the war. It’s strengths were in the boom and zoom arena. It is very fast, has superb diving capabilities, and a solid weapons fit. Try using the vertical arena instead of the horizontal one.

You can try maneuvers like a high or low yo-yo, which allows you to cut off your enemy’s turn circle and come in either high on their tail or below them.

The P-47 is a very effective fighter if you fly it the way it’s meant to be flown.

I have a question for anyone who can answer! I’ve been wondering for a while, what can I do to stop the P-47 spinning out on tight turns. I’ve tried combat flaps and havn’t worked out if they worsen or lessen the effect, I’ve also tried easing off of the stick and not pulling so hard but then the turn really isnt tight. Any thoughts?

Cheers, Huw:)
