IL-38 & P-3 Successors

We Know that IL-38 and P-3 both have ‘come of age’ πŸ˜‰ , we also know that both IL-38 & P-3 needs replacement. We also know that P-3 has got ready its replacemt in the form of Boeing’s MMA and the P-7 was burried lonf back. But we dont know whats succeding the IL-38.

But many would be aware of the fact that Russians are thinking of a successor for the IL-38s and have some ideas fruitition of which needs funding. Many would also be having an idea as to the natural contenter to become the successor to the Il-38s and maybe Tu-142 too. And that comes from the Tu-204 family of civilian aircraft, same as where the Boeing come from civilian B737 Family. The Tu-204 family member which naturally will be taking up this role would be the Tu-204C , again the cargo variant of the Tu-204-200 or mainly known as Tu-214. Tu-204C has got the maximum payload capacity among the family members of Tu-204 with 27t.

So now, we just look to some of the basic datas about the two marinetime partol aircrafts

Plan

The Plans call for up to 109 aircraft to be purchased by the Navy to replace its aging fleet of 223 P-3 aircraft, it was said at contract award in June 2004. 15 to 20 more MMAs could be needed if the requirement to replace the EP-3E Aries II is added again to the project. For now, this should be covered by a maritime version of the US ArmyΒ΄s Aerical Common Sensor programme.

Cost

The MMA System Development and Demonstration (SDD) is valued at 3,9 billion Dollars (exactly 3889979744 in a cost-plus-award-fee deal), it was said on 14 June 2004 at 5 pm. The total program estimated value is approximately $15 billion over a 10-year production run, Boeing said at contract award

Features

The Boeing 737 MMA is part of the new-generation 737-family. Modifications for the role of anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare include:
– Search radar in the nose
– Crew rest area
– 2 observer stations
– 5 mission tactical workstations with room for growth (Boeing claims 23 pre cent more floor space than P-3). Boeing plans to fit fully open-architecture systems based on the Nimrod MRA 4 concepts.
– MAD in the tail
– 2 sonobuoy storage racks and 3 automated rotary launchers
– weapons bay aft of the wingbox
– 4 wing pylons for external stores
– Improved ECS for increased electronics MTBF

As part of its efforts to win the MMA competition, Boeing formed an industry team with four partners:

CFM International, a 50/50 joint company of General Electric USA, and Snecma, France, provides the CFM56 military engines that power the Boeing 737 MMA. They feature 180 kVA generators.

Northrop Grumman’s Baltimore-based Electronic Systems sector will provide the electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor, the directional infrared countermeasures system, and the electronic support measures system. Northrop Grumman’s Information Technology sector, based in Herndon, Va., will develop data links for MMA.

Raytheon will provide the APS-137 Maritime Surveillance Radar and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) solutions. Raytheon is also offering its revolutionary GPS Anti-Jam, Integrated Friend or Foe, and Towed Decoy Self-Protection Suites, and the aircraft’s Broadcast Info System (BIS) and UHF Satcom capability.

Smiths Aerospace supplies both the Flight Management and Stores Management systems on the Boeing 737 MMA.

The MMA program will employ about 1,600 people at IDS facilities in St. Louis, Seattle and Patuxent River, Md.

and the probable successor to the IL-38s, I’m quoting the figures of the civil airliner, but hope u guys are smart enough to make out the range, payload etc etc …

Tu-204 ‘Ocean-Hunter’ πŸ™‚

Crew – 3 on the civil one, though it can be reduced to 2 like the IL-96 disposing the Flight engineer

Engine – PS-90A
Thrust – 35,200 pounds (157 kN) , same as used on Tu-204

A/c length, m – 46,0
A/c height, m – 13,9
Wing span, m – 42,0
Wing area, m2 – 184,2
Fuselage section, m – 3,8 x 4,1

Weights
Max takeoff weight, t – 110,75
Max landing weight, t – 93,0
Max fuel reserve, t – ,710
Max payload, t – 25,2

Passenger capacity – 210
Flight range at max payload, km – 4340
Cruise speed, km/h – 810-850
Field length, m – 2250

so thats all about the most probable successor to the IL-38, which needs to be kickstarted and Indian navy would be better off pulling this one out and would ned a good number of these as a replacement of IL-38s and also Tu-142 and this will keep them in good sted in the long run.

————————————————————————–
There are three variants of PS-90A – the basic PS-90A, the PS-90A-76 and the improved PS-90A variant – PS-90A2.

PS-90A
The PS – 90A engine, is standard one for Ilyushin Il-96-400, Tupolev-204 family. It is rated at 35,200 pounds (157 kN) thrust.
Fuel consumption does not exceed
– 7000 … 8000 kg per 1 flight hour (for IL- 96 – 300);
– 3500 kg per 1 flight hour (for TU-204)
Oil consumption
– No more than 0.3 kg per 1 engine for 1 flight hour

PS-90A-76
This is a modification of the basicPS-90A engine, which extends the service life of the large fleet of the IL-76 transport airplanes and raises their efficiency by replacing the earlier D-30KP. This is rated nominally at 32,000 pounds (142 kN) thrust.

PS-90A2
This is the advanced version of the PS-90A It is also lighter than PS-90A and features improved FADEC. All these is said to improve the performance and reduce maintenance costs by 40%. It is completely interchangeable to the PS-90A, allowing simple upgrades on present aircrafts with PS-90A engines. The thrust rating is same as the PS-90A with 35,200 pounds (157 kN) thrust, but is also capable of 39,600 pounds (176 kN) thrust.
