To make up for it, I’ve found a different pic!
That is indeed the unfortunate CAF example, you can see the difference in appearance between Kermit’s polished aluminium and the CAF’s ‘silver paint’ finish.
To get back to the start of this thread: Kermit’s Fantasy of Flight hosts an event called Mustangs and Mustangs where he assembles examples of both the cars and the aircraft. I’m guessing that is where the photos were taken! It makes sense then that both his Mustangs are used as backdrops.

The best restored P-51 for me is in Preddys’ colours & owned by Ken Wagnon. It’s in the colours of the one he was killed in.

No its not – its Kermits P51C; they were both painted as red tails….

Dammit, the photo I pulled up in Google after typing “Commemorative Air Force Mustang” showed that exact same one!! 😡 Not amused! 😡
Apologies, all. I’ll stick to what (little) I know about Spits in future…
(Mustangs look all the same to me, anyway!)

You can recognise Kermit’s P-51 by the level of shine :p

Yes it is the CAF’s P-51C. The pilot was killed in the ensuing crash, into woodland I believe. Amazingly, they’re going to restore this one again!
It’s not the CAF example. This is Kermit Weeks’ P51C also in the redtail scheme.

Like almost all US restorations, too glossy to look realistic in my opinion.

I believe that this is the Red Tail P-51 that crashed not long ago…just remember seeing the story on CNN here in the states. If not this one , then there was a P-51 that cracked up on landing….maybe someone else can fill in the blanks. Kermit Weeks “Cripes A Mighty 3rd” is one great bird..fully restored and minus the 50 cals that dont work…Maj Preddy could get in this Mustang today and fly a mission !!
TC !
