I'm back!

After a week away with mates (also known as “big piss up”) and then coming home to have my computer blow up (!!!), I’ve returned!

Here’s a welcome back present for myself!

I spent a week in Atsugi a few years back, all jet lagged and dopey when I arrived, switched on the TV and first thing on was woodlice racing. I went for long walk………

If there is any Japan info I can help with, drop me a line. One thing I can tell everyone. Japanese TV is awful. The commercials are the pits.

RE: I’m Back!

That must be the Crossair Saab 2000 landing from Zurich. The flight goes daily Zurich-Jersey-Guernsey-Zurich.
The runway is very hilly, when you take off you go up and down, quite fun!Its the same in Guernsey.
Below is a link to another view of the runway at JER.I can’t find one of Guernsey which is annoying. However,I will take one of the runway next time I go up there.

RE: I’m Back!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-08-02 AT 04:55 PM (GMT)]A TriStar!, it must be safe if all those airlines operate from it.

It does look like quite a small runway though, this photo was taken from your fav a/c, a Saab 2000 on final’s for rw 09. The pilot in command must have been taking the photo, and not really concentrating, cos according to those PAPIs, he’s too high!

Regards

Luke

RE: I’m Back!

A TriStar landed once!
The airlines that operate the A320/757 to Jersey on charters are:
JMC:Used a 757 and A320 on the Faro charters.
Air 2000:Used a 757 on the Sardinia and Lyon charters.
Monarch:Used the 757 on Tunisia charters.
Air Luxor:Used an A320 on a Faro Charter
Excel:Used a 737 on a Malta and Cyprus charter.
Azzura:Used a 737 on a Sardinia and Milan charter.
bmi:Used a A320 on the Naples charter
British Airways:Used to use the A320 and sometimes 757 on the daily LHR flight, which is no more.

bmi use the 737 on the summer flights to the UK.Braathens use the 737 on the Norway charters.Ryanair use the 737 on the Dublin charters.BA use the 737 to Gatwick.Eurowings use the BAe 146 to Dortmund. Lufthansa used to use the 737 to Frankfurt, however, this stopped two years ago.European Aviation use the 737 on charters to Malaga,Palma, Teneriefe and Lanzarote.I’m going over to Jersey in October half term for a day to see a few charters come in as this is the main time for them.I’ve heard rumours of a LOT 737 to Warsaw.

Guernsey unfortunately doesn’t get any big ones in. This summer we had a Mearsk 737 in as well as the SATA 737,though this is just about it.We get more props in because Anglo Normandy aviation does a lot of work on them,so we get some different ones in such as FedEx Shorts 360s.We definitely need a new terminal because our old one is nice but small and tired looking.

RE: I’m Back!

Thanks v. much for the info.

I did think Guernsey’s terminal looked a little old, especially compared to Jersey’s, so it’s good that a new one’s being built.

Wow, I didn’t think a 757/A320 would be able to get into Jersey!
I don’t think I’d feel that comfortable taking off & landing in that size a/c form Jersey, although I’m sure it’s safe.

RE: I’m Back!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-08-02 AT 01:20 PM (GMT)]I’m glad you enjoyed your trip.
The new terminal was completed in 1997 and like you said is quite big.In the winter you think why thet built it so big,but in the summer with all the holiday flights, you can see why.The terminal is bright with the glass atrium and very modern plus the Alpha Tax free shopiing has some good items. The viewing area is very good, views of the stands and out to sea.The old M&S used to be up there, the only airport shop they ever had.
You probably saw the SATA International 737 from Funchal, which sometimes goes via here in Guernsey. The 737 is not the largest aircraft to be seen in Jersey.757s/A320s of numerous charter airlines also operate there, infact i’m actually going over there in October to see a few.
Fog is very common in Guernsey, the sun in August meant we got a lot in during the first couple of weeks of the summer.I remember one day it came in late afternoon and didn’t leave till the afternoon the next day.You probably saw the old shack, which is Guernsey’s terminal. Its very old but work has started on our new terminal. Should be ready next year..I can’t wait!

RE: I’m Back!

It was brilliant, thanks. Much bigger airport than I expected, & nice and modern, plus its got a great viewing area, I saw that foregn 737 land and I thought it was going to overshoot!! It seemed to touch down about half way down the runway, but slowed down very quickly.

It’s a Dash 8 heaven with the BA & flybe. Dash 8s. I was amazed at the initial climb rate from the Q400 when I saw it take off, it was in new Flybe colours which I quite like.

We went in one of Flybe’s Dash 8-300s, G-JEDD, as I expected. It’s a VERY nice a/c, I was so suprised at how quiet it was. It was my fist turboprop flight and I thought it would be noisy. (although I did go in Shorts 360 to Jersey from Exeter when I was one year old, but I obviosly can’t remember that!)
It was a very smooth flight, we flew at 9,000 feet and were there in just 30 mins.
Cabin service began almost just as we left the ground, and I hope the brakes are good on those trollys, cos we were climbing quite alot while they began the service!

On the return flight, it was delayed a few hours cos there was fog in Guernsey where we had to stop.
We went on G-JEDD again. It was just a 20 minute stop over at Guernsey, We were not allowed to leave the a/c, but from my window I saw the Augriny trislander which had just taken off before us at Jersey.
Again we flew at 9,000 feet, and it was quite a smooth flight exept for some turbulnce on desent and approach.
Our Captain was appropratly named ‘Captain Bird’! and their were 2 Cabin Crew.

I hope to visit another channel Island or two again soon!

Regards

Luke

Work Experience

Yep, I’ve been to the Fleet Air Arm Mueseum, and I’m going to Yeovilton Air Day on 21 Sept.

I know Seaton Heights, and the I think the tram is quite funny!!!, I can hear them tooting their horns from my house!

That work ex. was brilliant, and when I went to Iscavia Light Aircraft Engineering (a company owned by flybe.), there was all these engineers shouting out “Don’t bleady bother being an engineer”.

Also, I got to watch the fire crew doing a practise, so they had the silver aircraft in flames, which I’m sure reassured any nervous flyers on board the Flybe Dash 8 which was going straigh past us during take-off! }>

I even got a 15 minute flight on Celtic Air Traning’s Cessna 150,
G-BOVS. It was a good flight down the River Exe and back.

Flybe were also going to let me jump seat the Dash 8-300 G-JEDD down to the channel Islands and back but the pilot said no, which I can understand.

It was a good 2 weeks.

Regards

Luke

RE: I’m Back!

Its cool to see inside the tower at Exeter (from the photos). I fly at Dunkeswell and i often fly overhead Exeter. Good photos, but nothing compared to when i went up Stansted’s tower a few weeks back, that was unbelievable! And the jumpseat flights i went on with GO, that was cool, infact, i think I will scan them in and post them! You can see me with the two other pilots! YEAAAA!

RE: I’m Back!

Oh, and did you see that old Silver aircraft on the other side of the runway?, it’s used for fire practises and when I was on my Work Experience at EGTE, I used the monitor (that white thing on the top of the fire engine) to spray foam all over it! That was fun!:D

I also got a visit to the tower & approach while was there.
