Im back Flight Report BY089A/B

August 22nd 2003 BY089A LBA-CFU Seat 38A
Britannia 757-200 G-CDUP
Estimated departure time-06:30
Actual departure time 06:45
Estimated arrival time 11:45
Actual Arrival time 11:36

An early morning flight to Corfu with Britannia. Check in went quite fast and we were on our way to the departure lounge. I spotted our plane G-CDUP and was disappointed to see it at an airbridge. I also spotted 4 Jet2 737s a couple of Eastern Jetstreams 3 BMi Embraers and a Fokker and MyTravel 757-200 G-JALC. About 06:00 we were called for boarding and I was among the 1st to board. We were sat next to a very friendly man who was going to Corfu for the TENTH time. The captain came on and said our flight time would be 2hrs 50mins and off we went. I couldnt comment on the meals because we didnt have one but I didnt see many people having them. Entertainment was the Kumars at No42 blackadder and Holiday-Eastenders Special. I sat with the radio on most of the time looking out the window. About half an hour before landing we started our descent into corfu and we had the usual great approach into Corfu flying round the edge of the island. A nice smooth touchdown followed. One thing that did disappoint was that before take off the Captain said hed come on with route info during the flight and he didnt come on until landing. We parked up next to G-OBYI 767-300 which was going to Gatwick and a Futura 737-800 which had just arrived from Belfast/Dublin I cant remember though it did have an American Registration. We had to wait about an hour for our bags as usual in Corfu. And off we went to Kaloudis Village in Arilas for 2 weeks which was absolutely brilliant. Ill post the return trip report in a seperate post.

EGNM-Have you got Airliner World Sept 2003? If so look at the Tenerife feature and theres a picture of SE-DZN. Im almost certain it says Boeing 737-400.

Thanks alot for all your comments guys ill be posting a piccy of G-CDUP next to G-OBYI a bit later on.
Pembo-Great point. G-CDUP was SE-DUP and before that was with Air 2000 and is 3 years older than G-OBYI. It was a nicer plane all round I thought the room was excellent.

Great report LBA – thanks.

You’re right T5; I’ve been on G-OBYI this summer to Cancun – great flights. I’ve also been on G-BYAI on an LPA-LBA run back in 1997 – can’t remember anything specific about the flight so it must have been OK.

LBA – isn’t CDUP one of the acquired 752s, whereas most of the others were new? Maybe thats why there is a difference in seat height as it still as the same seats as its precedessor?

Thanks for the ace picture A330. I preferred G-CDUP as the actual aircraft seemed quiter where as G-BYAI had quite a loud rour. But the staff and captain were much nice on BYAI.
Also A330 G-CDUP was still in the old C/S as was G-BYAI.
I have two Britannia models in the new TUi colours despite never flying on one in the new colours.

Excellent report LBA, sounds like you had good flights both ways. I saw G-CDUP a few months back at LGW, still in the old c/s. I got a pic, but its a very dark one (taken with an old camera)

Here it is for you.

Cheers for the report. 🙂

September 5th 2003 BY089B CFU-LBA Seat-35F
Britannia 757-200 G-BYAI
Estimated Departure time-21:40
Actual-21:45
Estimated Arrival time- 23:05
Actual-22:45

Arrived in Corfu airport feeling miserable about going home. The check in hall was packed with Britannia flights to Newcastle,Leeds Bradford,Manchester,Birmingham,Stansted and Liverpool. We must have waited to check in for nearly an hour it was horrendous. Went through to the departure lounge eventually where I saw what I think was G-BYAL in TUi colours going to Liverpool and G-BRIF 767-200 going to Birmingham. That flight was strange because everyone boarded and then about 50 people got off and had vouchers for meals in their hands and then G-BRIF took off. Anyone any idea what could have happened there?
Anyway after about an hour we were called for boarding at the same time as the Newcastle flight and as there was G-CDUP on the ground next to G-BYAI I assumed we would be getting that. But no the bus pulled up next to G-BYAI and on we got. I double checked we were on the right plane and then about 10 minutes after we got on the cabin crew made an announcement saying that the plane was going to LBA so it cant have just have been me! We were also parked next to a Eurofly A320.
We taxied and we had to wait about 5 minutes while a Britannia Sweden 737-400 SE-DZN (I think) landed.
We then taxied to the tiny turning circle and off we went making a sharp left turn soon after take off. The pilot on this flight was great explaining all the route and coming on to tell us what was underneath not that we could see much anyway.
On the TVS this time was Only Fools And Horses Big Impression and The Office. The flight time was about 3 hours and 5 minutes as we had a bit of a headwind and for a few minutes the seatbelt signs came on as we went through some turbulence.
We started our descent about 30 minutes before landing and it was very cloudy over the UK.
Another very smooth landing into LBA and it was pouring with rain just what you want after 2 weeks in the sun!(not).
For the 1st time we had buses to ferry us to the airport and I wanted to walk again despite the rain!
On the ground were usual Jet2s Easterns and BMI aircraft. Also an Iberworld A320 Air Europa 737 and MyTravel 757 G-JALC which was just taxying. The arrivals hall was chaos and we had to wait about 40 minutes as the the Tenerife Iberworld landed at the same time.
All in all two excellent flights with Britannia with the return been marginally better due to friendlier staff and captain. Feel free to ask questions.

A couple of other points. We sat next to exactly the same guy on the way home! No Joke! Neither of us could believe it.
Also Im probably the only person in the world to notice but I swear on my life that G-CDUP had taller seats than G-BYAI. My head went right over the top of the seat on G-BYAI where as on G-CDUP there was a ‘360’ logo on the top of the back of the seat and the seat dwarfed me! The ‘360’ logo was no where to be seen on G-BYAI as there was no room for it on the top.I remember the logo because some kid had drawn all over it in my seat. It sounds like a silly point but can anyone confirm/deny?
