I'm gutted. I missed seeing….

Sunderland.

That’s the only one that comes immediately to mind but I’m sure there are others.
I was fortunate to see a Vulcan on more than a few occasions (I always describe the sound as making your kidneys rattle) but would love to have seen the Finningley scramble.
I thought I saw an SR-71 at Mildenhall in the late 80s but was beginning to doubt my memories until I found a pic I took.

I have to agree with Der , I want to see XH558 roar along the runway at Leuchars then go vertical – the sound was like somebody ripping the sky in two – you could atcually feel the vibration through your chest – then laughing like feck at all the car alarms going daft.:D

In many ways we did miss a lot on that day, but I feel somehow it was a great goodbye. She lifted into the air and disapeared into the clag at 500ft(?). But we were left with that sound that Alistair described. It will be something I’ll always remember.

Even though it was just a few months back, I’m already kicking myself about not making an effort to see the Concordes departing to thier retirement homes. I did go up to the airfield to see the final landings in October, and she would always go over the house on approach to 27L or 27R anyway, but thinking back on it I realise how few take offs I saw (I heard quite a few in my lifetime,but could never see much as she was always a distance away.) I had planned to go and see the very last departure,but then at the last minute I had to go up to Newcastle,so didn’t get to see it. The last time I saw a Concorde in flight was ‘AD heading off to NY for perching on that damn raft. The crew kept the ‘burners going for a long time,pulling her round in a steep fighter-like curve,heading off into the sun. Even though she was some distance away it was still an awesome thing to see and hear. I got rather carried away and said ‘Go for it girl!’ out loud, which brought a few funny looks in my direction. 😀
Oh well,perhaps G-BOAB will make a final,final flight in future on a ferry permit.I can but dream…

a bit different for me, i know i’ve seen a vulcan fly,i have the photograph taken by my dad to prove it as i was next to him when it was taken, the problem is….i cant remember. I have a vague recollection of a big triangular thing flying and lots of people getting excited but you know how things are, the more you think about it, the more invented the memories become. 🙁

Still, fingers crossed, might, just might, get a second chance.

Black 6. Stopped the year before I got back into airshows. That and the P38 Lightning. I remember seeing the picture in the paper of Black 6 on her back and felt really sad about it.

_ A full display by the Breitling fighters…would’ve loved to see that.
_The Birdcage Corsair from New Zealand, missed it by ONE year at Breckenridge before it departed for NZ.
_Seeing the Weeks Mosquito flying…again, a missed show at Breckenridge.

Other than that, done pretty well. Only have one B-17 I have’nt seen fly, ‘Fuddy Duddy’ up in NY…seen ALL the rest (and flown in ‘Shady Lady’!)

Its the Blackbird for me too,i saw the Vulcan many times saw the LA9 twice and saw the Sunderland once the SR71 never disaplayed at my local show Biggin Hill as far as i remember so never saw her.

Same for me, definetely the Blackbird. Really annoying to know that thing was still flying around when I started visiting airshows/airbases and still I never managed to see one flying. 😡 And I didn’t see any Vulcans to make up for that either!!! (we need a smiley that’s even more angry than the ‘mad’ one!!!!)

Not usually that interested in fast jets, but the one I really kick myself for missing is the SR 71 Blackbird.

It was supposed to be at my local show at Finningley one year, but for one reason or another (weather I think) was unable to display. Never saw that in the air, what a shame!

(still, I saw dozens of Vulcan displays which always left me grinning from ear to ear 😀 😀 )
