I know it is a Grumman Panther, but is it as unexpected as the guys are making it appear?

It is not a set up incident – it was a bang seat ‘demonstration’ during an air show…not sure of the exact scenario and did wonder if it was a flag or something on the seat with a dummy ??

These things do sometimes happen for real. I saw the accident when the seat fired from a parked Harrier at Yeovilton. The pilot died from his injuries. Definitely not a matter of entertainment. As to the original image in this thread, I guess it is a ‘set-up’ incident, but I really don’t know.

You’ll need a train, boat or plane to get to my ‘not so very’ local though. 😎
However… the scene is rigged, which is about the same as photo-edited to my old eyes and the OP did ask: but is it as unexpected as the guys are making it appear?

They’d have to have warp-speed reactions to behave like that. Where’s the canopy? If that ain’t Photoshopped, I’ll buy everyone in my local a pint. About as convincing as the Canberra flying through the hangar.

Anybody get a pint from J ??

The Russians showed a ‘civil’ ejection seat for light aircraft at Paris, I think it was in the earlier 2000’s. The aircraft used was a SU-26 or something similar

when was the last time an ejection seat was fired for the entertainment of the public at an airshow

I cannot remember the year but Martin Baker demonstrated a live zero-zero ejection seat firing off the back of a flat bed lorry at a Farnborough Air Show. I was there.

That’s great, thanks to all.
Interesting too, not the sort of thing you’d see these days which (of course!) raises the question of… when was the last time an ejection seat was fired for the entertainment of the public at an airshow – NOT used in anger, though – and has it ever happened in Britain?

Not an easy one to answer, as often, if you strip away the detail and go to the base of the website, this eliminates the Google part, there is no logical path to the article or image you were viewing. eg http://replicainscale.blogspot.com takes you to http://replicainscale.blogspot.co.nz/ – an nz website with a reasonable menu, historical based, so with a bit of trial and error, I did find the link and image, which was then devoid of any Google prefix. Otherwise it may be about just editing the url link to only use the direct link part, and cutting and pasting into a new tab or a new window.

But it didn’t for any other PC or laptop, as you will have it cached on your machine in the page file memory. Thanks for sharing the search though, it did help us to find the article.

According to this website…it was an airshow stunt at NAS Barbers Point

Just scroll down the page to see the image !

Mark Nankivil remembers this particular round of merriment from an 1965-66 air show at NAS Barber’s Point. The aircraft is an F9F-5KD (BuNo 126275) and the Airdales on the ramp are ready to spring into action, although the fella on the right may well be preparing to execute a hasty retirement from the festivities. “Holy Cow, Martha! Look at that sailor run!”) Running might not have been such a bad idea… Nankivil Collection

I just love* the automatic, unthinking, knee-jerk “OMG its photoshopped!” reaction to anything the least bit different… you’d think people would learn.

* For the “OMG its photoshopped!” crowd, this is a sarcastic statement… I really hate the auto-PS reaction.

And this is the direct link to the site: http://replicainscale.blogspot.com/2011/03/thirsty-camel-another-deuce-or-two-hot.html

Edit…looks like she may be a survivor

126275 owned by National Museum of Naval Aviation. Now at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park,
Mobile, AL. In 1987 was on display (as a DF-9E) at NAS Barbers Point, Oahu, HI
