To my great delight I found this cover commemorating the first through Flight from Hong Kong to London on March 27th 1936 at Oxfam in Harrogate the other day. They were demanding the princely sum of £2 for it but. then, I’ve always been a big spender! Interestingly, on the back the recipient has made a note that the cover arrived in Staffordshire on April 8th. What I want to know now of course is the identity of the aircraft that made the flight. Does anyone know please?

According to G-INFO, ACWD was transferred from Imperial to BOAC on 22/8/1940. Probably because of the war, the process of transfer of formal ownership of the various aircraft seems to have been rather protracted – this is some nine months after BOAC was formally established. The registration was ‘cancelled by the Secretary of State’ on 5/11/1941, presumably the date on which it became HK829.

17Mar1943 The aircraft was written off while landing at Noffution North.

The DH.86 sector was Penang-Saigon-Tourane (Annam) [night stop] – Hong Kong. The first service was flown by G-ACWD ‘Dorado’. It carried one passenger and sixteen bags of mail on the way to Hong Kong, but I haven’t found the return leg load yet. ACWD operated the route by itself until 6 June, when increasing loads necessitated the addition of a second aircraft.
