Imperial Airways – Crete

Not long back from two weeks in the sunshine of Crete. One day for a change from Minoan ruins we went to the small deserted island of Spinalonga near Elounda on the east of the island. Spinalonga was a leper colony until 1957 but tucked away is an exhibition of Elounda in the 1930s during its time as an Imperial Airways flying boat base. Aircraft in the photos were (I think) Short Kents with a steamer that served as a hotel for the passengers during overnight stops. There was one photo of a Kent(?) following a nasty prang on the water.
Hopefully there is an Imperial Airways expert on the forum that can tell more! The Elounda base was news to me at least & I wish we had more time (& could read Greek) to study the exhibition.

The two fatalities of the Scipio incident, shown in the above link, were both passengers, not crew members, I believe. Five passengers and the crew of four survived with injuries.

The steamer was the British steamship ‘HMS Imperia’.
