I read somewhere that many sailors during the war never actually sailed at sea – based inland in places like London or Scotland. That got me thinking.
Does anyone know of anyone who served in the RAF, but who never got to fly in an aeroplane – not even a joy ride? There must be one or two…

My grandad was accepted into the RAF in 44/45 but by the time he was about to go in the war was over and they had no need for him anymore.
He instead joined the Army and was part of the little-known army presence during the partition of India in ’47

I once knew a man who served in the Fleet Air Arm throughout the war and he never once flew nor even set foot aboard a ship. He was, if I remember correctly, a Wireless Telegraphist in London for almost six years.

Bit of a silly question surely, the majority of RAF servicemen don’t fly irrespective of time period, and as mentioned, some have absolutely no urge to do so.
Joyriding isn’t as common as some might perceive.

My grandmother worked at Bletchley park and was drafted into the wrens during the course of the war as a way of justifying the womens use (should have been working in the fields or building spitfires) even though she never took any courses or any training with the Navy she only had the uniform and had to give it back at the end of the war.
Also she could get sea sick by a duck pond so would not have been much use at sea!!

Plenty of sailors based in Scotland around the Scapa Flow area 😀

There were many people in the RAF when i was in who never flew and had no interest in flying. Quite a few of these people worked directly on aircraft.

All that time I though that watery stuff I grew up beside in Scotland was the sea…It must have been a big Loch (English translation…Lake) or something like that.:diablo:

If you consider the size of wartime RAF (from pastry chefs to the Marshal), I think you might find that the majority never flew. Im pretty sure that there is even plenty who never wanted to fly.
Or are you thinking of pilots who never flew?
