India `resells’ copters to Britain
By Hasan Suroor
LONDON, OCT 18. India is reported to have sold back to Britain the entire fleet of the jinxed Westland helicopters, bought in a controversial deal during Rajiv Gandhi’s regime in 1985 against expert technical advice.
While nine helicopters have already come here, the rest are expected to arrive later this year, The Guardian reported from New Delhi today saying they were sold for a “scrap value” of œ 900,000. India had bought them for œ 65 million which means a huge loss to the exchequer.
The fleet was grounded in 1993 after the helicopters were found technically unsuitable for Indian conditions. Two crashed – one in Jammu and one in Nagaland. An attempt was made to sell them and global tenders were invited but there were no takers for the œ 1.9 million pound reserve price.
