Indian Air Force Museum Palam

I am visiting New Delhi on business in the spring, and the Indian Air Force Museum is an obvious prime target during my spare time. I know where it is and when it is open, but I would appreciate any hints and tips from someone who has been there; for example is photography allowed?

Is there anything else to look out for in the area in the way of interesting aeroplanes?

Thanks for any help.

Slightly further afield, we’re off to Goa next week. Is the Naval Aviation Musuem at Bogmalai Beach near Dabolim worth a visit ?

it worth a wander around, probably an hour max.. hope you dont have to push your taxi part of the way like I did!! 😀

Steve,

In March 06 there were 2 Spitfires based at the IAF museum. One is on display in a corner of the main hangar, next to the Hurricane. The second (airworthy?) example was visible through a crack in the door of another hangar. I was moved on by a soldier when trying to photograph this. Interesting if it’s still there.

Interesting that in March 2005 the officer in charge of the Museum didn’t seem to be aware of the proximity of the ‘historic flight’ in the adjacent hangar and I assumed there had been some movement – obviously not.:)

It is doubtful that the Spitfire has flown in the past 15 years.

This shot taken 5 June 1991 on a previous visit.

The museum shop isn’t up to much, but the 2p cup of chai in the ‘cafe’ is well worth the risk!

On the road from downtown Delhi to the museum, you will probably drive past what I think is an Airforce college, which has a couple of aircraft on poles, but I didn’t get the chance to identify these.

Good luck!

It would be interesting to see a few of their Pushpak.

Then you can come and have a go in BXTO to compare!! 😉

Thanks for the helpful replies chaps. Dave, please PM me with more detail of what you need, rather then burdening this thread with it, and I will be more than happy to oblige.

Steve

You may try some universities in the area. In the past some very exciting finds have been made there. Perhaps a Spitfire is lurking somewhere. I have seen photo’s showing Spitfire and Hurricane wings lying in backyards.

Give it a try

Cheers
