Indian Airlines confirms order for 43 A320s.

Translated from Dutch:

http://www.luchtvaartnieuws.nl/news/?ID=12464
NEW DELHI – The previoulsy announced Indian Airlines order for 43 planes of the A320 family is now definitive. Earlier today (feb 20th) a contract was signed in New Delhi between Airbus and Indian Airlines, in the presence of French president Chirac and his Indian collegue Singh.

The order of Indian Airlines consists of 20 A319s, 4 A320s and 19 A321s. With it the state company will be the first in India to operate the A321. All planes are to be equiped with a two class layout and CFM56-5 engines.

Indian Airlines is a loyal customer of the A320. Already the airline operates 50 of the type. The similarity between the A320 family should make it easy to introduce the two new versions of the A320 (319/321). This way pilots and cabin crew can easily switch planes. For maintenance there are also distinct advantages.

No word on the gear layout. As you may be aware the main gear of IA’s A320 has 4 tires per strut instead of the more conventional 2.

Airbus are investing a lot in this boom in India. Which can only mean they are more open to a lot of risk.

One hopes this boom does not die in India, or airbus will find themselves with literally hundreds of A320s coming out of their plant with no owner. Or Worse yet, flooding the second hand market and lowering the A320 value considerably.

I think thats one reason you are not seeing the 737 flood this boom market. Boeing seem unwilling to play with the risk.

All that being said, if it all pays off, Airbus will be a very strong player for many years to come in Indian aviation.

Why do you think Boeing is so unwilling to take these risks and Airbus seems so ready to take them? Would it be that Airbus has more to loose or is it that Boeing is confident with it’s current approach for this region?

One more Indian carrier goes for Airbuses. I have no clue how all these planes will be able to land and take off without major delays for the next 3 years until the Delhi and Mumbai airports are modernized.

GoAir to buy 20 Airbus planes for 5,300 cr

MUMBAI, FEB 22: GoAir has placed an order for 20 aircraft with Airbus at a contract value of $1.2 billion (approximately Rs 5,300 crore). The orders were placed in the Asian Aero Space Conference in Singapore on Wednesday.

“The additional aircraft will allow us to expand aggressively into the North Indian and metro-to-metro flight routes,” GoAir managing director Jeh Wadia said in a statement released here on Wednesday. GoAir currently operates 3 Airbus A320s on 24 flights covering 11 cities.

The airline required these planes in order to respond to the “tremendous growth in air traffic we are experiencing in India and the increasing demand for GoAir,” Mr Wadia added.

GoAir is a low-cost carrier promoted by the Wadia Group, launched in November 2005 with scheduled services to Goa, Ahmedabad, and Coimbatore from Mumbai. The airline had already announced its plans to expand its fleet to 36 aircrafts in three years and the current announcement is part of this plan.

“These aircraft will allow us to develop our network and introduce new routes not previously served and we are excited about being able to offer the “Fly Smarter” experience to more cities and passengers throughout India,” Mr Wadia said. The new aircrafts too would have a single-class economy layout with 180 seats.

I believe the A320 range actually outsold the 737 in 2005

All air carriers in India are buying and have netted billions for both Boeing and Airbus, I believe that Kingfisher Airlines has also bought some ATR planes as well….

Yes indeed. The contract was for fifteen aircraft if I remember correctly. The type involved is the ATR-72-500.

How much more PR can Airbus and Indian milk out of this one order?

hmm, good question

1) first steel cutting
2) first wings attached to fuselage
3) first role out
4) first test flight
5) first delivery
6) first landing in India
7) first commercial flight

Repeat this for the 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th and 43rd (last) plane. Perhaps IA will start naming its planes, then every plane can be a media sensation! Of course it must be said that ANY Indian state-run airplane order that makes it through the final hurdle is worthy of some attention. Took them bloody long enough to make the final decision. Same for AI with their Boeings.

I wonder how many more times the exact same order will be announced in the news.

So far it was announced when the order was given, Then announced again when the go ahead was given, then again when funding was clear and then once more before christmas. Now it is being announced again.

How much more PR can Airbus and Indian milk out of this one order?
