Kingfisher inks Rs 8,100 cr deal to buy 30 Airbus A320

MUMBAI, DEC 18: The UB group-promoted Kingfisher Airlines has signed a contract worth Rs 8,100 crore to acquire a total of 30 new Airbus A320 aircraft by 2008, taking the entire fleet strength to 34. The company is also planning an initial public offering (IPO) over the next four years.

Kingfisher Airlines has already leased four aircraft from Debis Air Finance and plans to commence domestic operations from April 2005.

“We will acquire 10 Airbus A320 aircraft by 2005 and this will be entirely financed by the UB group. We will acquire the other 20 planes by 2008,” UB group chairman Vijay Mallya said.

He said the airline is expected to break even in the first year of operation. “The high cost of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and landing and parking charges will determine this. We want to make our operating costs the lowest in the industry and this should help us in achieving our break-even in the first year of operations,” added Mr Mallya.

Mr Mallya also had a meeting with civil aviation minister Praful Patel to discuss the high ATF charges and said he was optimistic of this being put forward to the finance minister.

According to him, Kingfisher Airlines will be fashioned on the lines of JetBlue Airways. The airline will have 174 seats on each flight and will be the first one in the country to have video screens at every seat. Further, the airline will have only one class “Kingfisher Class”.

Mr Mallya also ruled out the possibility of selling tickets at the rates quoted by no-frills airlines like Air Deccan. “The tickets will be available through travel agents, the internet as well as on the telephone. But the tickets will not be low-priced,” he added.

Meanwhile, it is expected that the UB group will announce its foreign partner for its flagship company, United Breweries, on Sunday. According to industry sources, InBev and UK’s Scottish & Newcastle are in the fray to pick up an over 15% stake in UB.
