SRINAGAR, India – An Indian Air Force MiG 27 fighter jet crashed
near the main airport in Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, a police official said.
“The crash is being investigated,” he said.
The plane crashed at the military wing of Srinagar’s main airport at 12:25 pm (0655 GMT).
The area around the crash site has been sealed off by security forces and all civilian flights out of Srinagar put on hold.
Squadron Leader RK Dhingra said in New Delhi no one was injured when
the MiG 27 “met with an accident on the runway” during takeoff.
“There was some problem with the aircraft but at this stage I cannot spell out what exactly was the nature of the problem as investigations are still on,” Dhingra said.
“Fortunately, the pilot is safe and no one in the airport got hurt,” he added.
