Was reading the latest issue of Air International..can’t remember exactly what the article said..but it discussed that India was officially looking for 125 fighter aircraft to replace the MiG-21 ASAP, and expects the winner to start deliveries soon after..
The candidates they listed are the Saab Gripen, Sukhoi Su-35, and Mirage 2000-5. They also stated that due to urgency of replacing the MiG-21s, they couldnt wait for the LCA.
logistically…it would seem the Mirage 2000-5 would make the perfect replacement for the light fighter role, but is rather expensive. The Su-35 would have commonality with the Su-30s, but is more of a heavy fighter and cost more to operate due to complexity…and the Gripen.. that one is an iffy since its out of the norm.
