I don’t think we currently have a thread for TNI-AU, and based on recent developments I think one is warranted.
Just in the last few years we have seen…
— new basic trainer: Grob G120TP
— new LIFT: T-50i
— new COIN aircraft: Super Tucano
— new light transports: C-295
— acquisition of ex-RAAF C-130Hs
— reactivation of existing F-16 Block 15/OCU
— purchase and upgrade of Ex-USAF F-16 Block 32
— finally filling out a full squadron of Flanker types
Probably most significant is Indonesia’s 20% stake in Korea’s KF-X program with a commitment to purchase 50 aircraft.
In Jan 2014 Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro indicated that Indonesia also has a requirement for a further 16 fast jets in the 2015-2020 timeframe to replace its F-5s.
It is evident that TNI-AU is laying the groundwork to emerge as a modern, capable air force over the next couple of decades. With the nation having bright economic prospects, it should be an interesting journey to watch!
