Indonesia's National Corvette / Korvet Nasional

Any news update about the “Korvet Nasional”?

Last September TEMPO Interactive of Indonesia reported the Korvet Nasional’s technical specifications were set and all that remained was budget allocation.

Cheers,

PT PAL Indonesian shipyard industry will start the construction of 2 LPD ships. It was announced during the first steel cutting and keel laying of one of the ship ordered by the ministry of defense in Surabaya not a while ago; as the realization of the contract signed by PT PAL and Daewoo International Corporation on the 28th of march 2005.

Pembuatan kapal LPD ke 3 dan 4 itu, diawali dengan penandatanganan Berita Acara dari Direktur Pengembangan (Dirbang) Usaha PT PAL Indonesia Ny. Kusumawati kepada Direktur Daewoo Mr. Sung Hun Lee yang kemudian dilanjutkan kepada Asisten Kasal bidang Logistik Laksda TNI Yoedoko, disaksikan oleh Kasal Laksamana TNI Slamet Soebijanto, Dirut PT PAL Indonesia Adwin Suryahadipraja serta Dirada Dephan Marsma TNI Muchtar Lubis yang mewakili Dirjen Ranahan Dephan.

Not important

“With these LPD constructions by PT PAL, it is hoped that it will reduce our national dependence to foreign nation regarding future acquisition of warship”, according to Chief of Navy.
Similar with the ships previously built in South Korea, the third and fourth LPD will be designed wholly for TNI-AL, it is designed to accommodate 100 mm cannon and equipped with CIC, fire control system, and communication equipment for coordination with other friendly forces.

Other than having the capacity of carrying 507 sailors, 13 APC/IFV?, 5 helicopters and the stealth design, these two locally built LPD can also be used for civil operation like humanitarian, disaster relief mission.

this is the rough translation, sorry for the bad grammar.

As Ja pointed out, the remainder Sigma class corvettes have are under construction. There were earlier attempts to change these notably to Russian vessels presumably due to vested interests of those involved..

The National Covertte program at PT PAL seems to be around for a long time and had it start when they started with the FPB-57.

150m wont purchase a frigate…. That is the price of small frigate
it just ‘slip of the tongue’ (and that is where indonesia DoD reputation vanished) —
And for the navy, a corvette is a corvette is a corvette… in Indonesia everyone call it corvette
chief of navy recently criticize the purchase (signed in the era of former chief) and he said he wants a ‘bigger ship, frigates’

And– Kornas is different program with Sigma
The Kornas will entirely built in Indonesia
However the plan is dead and life and dead again not sure when (or even if) it will became reality… maybe next 5-10 years (im skeptical )

Hello? Am I on another planet here? Am I not being understood?

KRI Diponegoro (365) has started sea trials in the Netherlands, while KRI Hasanuddin (366) has just been launched and is currently fitting out.The other two vessels in the class: KRI Sultan Iskandar (367) and KRI Frans Kaisiepo (368) are still under various stages of construction in the Dutch yard. They are all of the Sigma design and fitted with COTS and MOTS equipment.

The Korean contract is for something completely different- The Small Destroyers which are just that. If you guys are interested the order of ships goes like this…

  1. Crusiers
  2. Destroyers
  3. Frigates
  4. Corvettes
  5. Gun Boats/ Missiles Boats
  6. Patrol Craft

Any “Small Destroyer” is more likely to be a Frigate rather than a Corvette simply because of the weapons fit- and yes that is how you determin what is what, Displacement with weapons fit. The best example I can give is the MEKO 360 design; In Argentine service it is a Destroyer because of the heavier weapons fit, conversly in Nigerian service it is only a Frigate!

thanks for this info, Tunasa! I thought that only the first two Sigma corvettes were scheduled to be built in the Nederlands. Is it official that De Schelde will build the next two Sigma?
X:)

The news I heard about the Corvette from my Indonesian friends is that De Schelde will built the next two corvettes. Once again, the navy and parliament do not have an agreement about how the project will be carried out. The navy believes that one thing is more suitable but the parliament believes that other designs are more economically visible.

I heard about a rumor that they changed the base concept from Dutch Sigma Corvette to Italian Commandante Class Corvette. However, there are no official news from the government and I am kind a afraid that it will be stuck in proposal process.

The navy or parliament seems to have some disagreement on the technical design of the ship. Moreover, there are some discrepancies between what the contract and the reality; for example, it was known that the last 2 of Sigma corvettes will be built in PT PAL in Surabaya but at the end they decided that it will be built in Dutch shipyard.

My government does not give an accurate information about it, they seems to avoid giving an exact statement about it.

A few days ago South Korea’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy announced that it will help Korean shipbuilders win the Indonesian contract through a government-to-government talk. I guess Daewoo or Hyundai are lobbying hard to get into the Indonesian corvette business.

The Ministry said the Indonesian government has two projects, a USD 750 million-worth project to build two submarines and another USD 150 million-worth one to build two “small destroyers (in other words corvettes).”

Cheers,
Sunho

A news from IDEX 2007 about Sigma corvette

Royal Schelde corvette prepares to set sail

Two years after presenting its new SIGMA (Ship Integrated Geometrical Modularity Approach) family of surface ships at IDEX 2005, Dutch shipbuilder Royal Schelde will shortly start sea trials for the first of four 90m SIGMA corvettes on order for the Indonesian Navy.

According to Schelde, the modular and scalable SIGMA concept allows customers to tailor ship designs to meet specific operational requirements for offshore patrol vessels, corvettes and light frigates. The design philosophy balances military characteristics and capabilities with a platform that is economical to build and operate, and maximises commonality between ships.

This means that training, logistics, maintenance routines and spares holdings can be optimised. Schelde points out that the majority of the cost of a ship is not dictated by the outer appearance, nor by the structural infrastructure of shell, inner decks and compartments, but by the internal arrangement and density of equipment outfit.

As such, its solution is to focus on commonality in equipment, components, maintenance and training without jeopardising the specific operational capabilities of the various assets. Indonesia confirmed an order for an initial two SIGMA corvettes in January 2004. The first of these, KRI Diponegoro, was floated out from Schelde’s Vlissingen covered dock in September last year to complete outfitting and undertake machinery system setting-to-work. Sea trials will commence shortly. Agreement was reached with Indonesia in May 2005 for two more ships, with the contract signed in January 2006.
