I have mentioned this on the forum before, but I’ve been unable to find the post……
I’m soon emmigrating to Canada and I need a new “happy place” as Duxford will be a bit of a trek!!
I’ll be based near Toronto and would appreciate pointers to the nearest air/military museums.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Sat,
Get a copy of Bob Ogden’s Aircraft & Museums of the World No.10 – Canada & Latin America. Worth it! I was lucky enough to travel across Canada last year, and there’s a load of great places, but they are all a LONG way apart!
There’s a bit in Ontario – best for flying warbirds by far in Canada is the Canadian Warplane Hritage, in Hamilton, closely followed by the world class national museum – the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa; static but a great selection, and they run a few engines on Canada day which is more than the RAF Museum do… The Nanton(?) Halifax restoration team are ‘just’ up the lake to the East of Toronto.
If you post a Qeation on the WIX board (http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/vafrefugees/wix7msgboard.mv) there’s a few friendly Canadians who’ll advise.
Cheers

About 7-8 hours south you can get to Dayton Ohio, home of the USAF Museum. It doesn’t have the flyable aircraft as Duxford does but there are tons of aircraft to look at.

If your driving down to Dayton I would recommend stopping in Akron, Ohio at the Military Aircraft Preservation Society museum. It’s a growing outfit that is restoring several aircraft to both static and flyable condition. In addition to their restoration projects they have a few of their own museum pieces as well as a few privately flyable aircraft (P-51, B-25, etc.) on display.
About 5-6 hours from Toronto you can get to the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run (WW2 manufacturer of the B-24) outside of Detroit. In addition to the static aircraft they have a number of flyable aircraft but I recommend going during the non-airshow season months as most are out making their rounds for most of the year.

Another 1-2 hours past Detroit in Kalamazoo, Michigan there is the Kalamazoo Air Zoo Museum which has a great collection of aircraft, most of which fly. They also have a restoration facility that you can tour. The Air Zoo is moving in the near future to a new facility in St. Louis or something but I don’t think that’s happening for a year or so.
I hope these help. They aren’t next door to Toronto but I feel they are worth the trip.

Hi Sat
The best place near Toronto would have to be Canadian Warplane Heritage at Hamilton – about 2 hours drive from Toronto City. That is as near as you can get to a ‘Duxford’
