Information needed on spitfire y2y

Hi everyone, I have a bit of a dilema we are looking for information on an rcaf 242 squadron spitfire that was in france d-day +4. In particular looking for any pictures or sn# info that might be out there.

What I have so far was it was flown by Jerry Blair and was one of the first 4 aircraft to land in france after d-day at st.Croix with CO Johnny Johnson. The aircraft call letters were y2y according to the log book.

If anyone could provide further info it would be greatly appreciated as we are going to be painting our spitfire prototype up in his aircrafts markings for an upcoming show and wish to dedicate it to Jerry.

Thanks
Jeremy

Just one other quick question does the aircraft still exist or was it scrapped after it went to the French? It would be interesting to have some history on the plane so that when Jerry is back up here I could let him know what became of her.

Cheers

That is great guys that helps out greatly. We have Jerry coming back this friday for another shop visit and we are hoping to have the cockpit area ready for him to autograph. He is now 87 and drove up from Montreal area (8hr drive) and is quite the amazing fellow to talk to, I only wish we had run into him years ago. In the meantime alot of work to be done to get her ready for that and the upcoming show we are taking the fuselage to.

Thank you for the picture that is great!

Jeremy,

I think you will find Y2-Y is a Spitfire MkIX of 442 sqdn, and not as you suggest 242.

Anyway, records show 442sq landed in France on D-Day + 9

The serial No. of the Spitfire Y2-Y of; F/O.G.R.Blair is MK464.

Photograph, I have a rather poor ‘copy of a copy’ you are welcome to have a ‘copy’ if you don’t come up with a better offer on here.

F/O. Blair also claimed an FW destroyed on 20 July with this a/c.

The Spitfire survived the war being sold to the French A/F in 1946.

Good luck with your project, hope this helps.

Mervyn.
