Dear Forum
Christmas I know, but in case somebody out there retires to the “man cave” during the festive nausea – am looking into researching a acquaintance of my mothers. My mother was brought up in Sheffield and after the war visited the Lodge Moor POW camp on Redmires Road outside Sheffield. My mother and her sisters were part of a dancing troupe (Audrey Coopland’s School of dancing) and the children put on Christmas parties for the inmates in 1945/46. In 1947, some POWs were allowed out to local residents homes for Christmas. My grandfather (ex WW1 RHA and Home Guard in WW2) was allowed to look after Manfred Raukamp in 1947 before he returned home to Heiligenhaus. My mother kept in contact with him every Christmas from 1948 until 2013 and the pair exchanged Christmas cards each year. Manfred died in Berlin on Boxing Day 2013, having received a card from my Mother, read to him by his daughter two days before he passed away. I have a photo of him in the camp that I will scan this evening and post here.
One year on from his passing, we are interested on finding out how he came to be in the camp, and are searching for any records that might be out there. Any forumites know of any particular good sources searchable by name?
