Information Wanted Miles M1 Satyr

Hello

I’m looking for any information on the Miles M1 Satyr – which is available and to hand from fellow forum members – including drawings, plans, photographs and text (history, technical details and anecdotal evidence) to paint a complete picture and aid the building of a replica.

I understand that no plans for this aircraft survive, but anything published in contemporary 1930s publications would also be advantageous to acquire. Details of the colour scheme she sported would also be appreciated.

In a previous post I revealed my interest in building a replica (static or replica). After careful consideration I have ruled out the DH4, Avro 504 and Westland-Hill Pterodactyl. The Miles M1 Satyr is a diminutive aircraft – small enough to be built in my flat – I kid you not! Ah, the delights (or benefits) of living on one’s own. Each wing is no greater than 3.5ft x 9.5ft, while the fuselage once built will squeeze through my kitchen window. Pity I live on the 2nd floor.

Although plans don’t exist, most dimensions appear to be to the nearest 0.5ft (6ins). The fuselage width appears to be 2ft, for example.

So, any help with securing any/all scraps of information would be grately appreciated.

Best Wishes

But when you consider that the Satyr was the first of thousands of Miles aircraft…

At the risk of being accused of pedantry, it wasn’t! Yes, it was the first aircraft in the M. series but, in terms of F.G.Miles designed aircraft, it was preceded by the Southern Martlet and, even before that, by the the Gnat biplane! Maybe one day someone will be tempted to construct a replica Gnat. However in terms of drawings, that would present an even greater challenge. Although someone really intrepid could start from the photo of the uncovered airframe on page 2 of Don Brown’s book!

Phillip, have found my Harborough (not Harleyford) Miles book and the Satyr is included and contains a 1/72nd scale plan.

PM me with your e-mail address if you still want it.

Go for it, would be just wonderful to see such a replica, better than a thousand “plastic kits” and I mean the full scale ones not the the Airfix and Revell ones………….!!!!

Ah, I’m glad to see that having offered you the apple from the tree, you could not resist being tempted by it! Maybe I’ll live to see a replica Miles Satyr. Maybe you can construct a replica of the Hon. Mrs Victor Bruce to go with it. Now that would frighten grown men!

In all honesty I looked at the Satyr years ago and thought: “no, it’s not important or indeed impressive enough…”. The only Miles design I really looked at was the original M2.

But when you consider that the Satyr was the first of thousands of Miles aircraft…

Firstly, anyone reading this, please don’t hold your breathe. We are talking years and years. My only real concern is that someone might build it before me. Also, this isn’t going to be an easy project – though probably more doable that saving RAF Driffield (not a lost cause as things stand).

Regarding the Satyr, I know there is an engine available. I haven’t contacted the owners, but that will happen within a week or so. I’m trying to sort myself out, before I can even start on this project proper. I’m having to add at least a year or two, to sort out my personal circumstances, before I can start gluing bits of wood together.

I know that detailed plans don’t exist. The forward fuselage is covered with plywood, so it is unclear what is beneath. More later…

I think I’m right in thinking the 1940’s Harleyford book on Miles Aircraft had a three-view of the Satyr in it – I’ll have a look in mine tomorrow.

Also you could try posting a request on any aero-modelling sites you can find – someone’s bound to have built a model of it.

Best you can do is to contact Peter Amos of the Miles Collection. The collection has the most extensive data of Miles aircraft collected in one place. If you want his contact details, PM me.
