INS Mumbai – Trafalgar 200

As promised here are a few pictures of INS Mumbai I took at last years Trafalgar 200 using my old Canon AE1.

Certainly a big old ship, the one you saw during 97 Ja Worsley was the first in class INS Dehli which was launched during 97.

Well here are the pictures with a few comments, have a look and then feel free to ask questions about my visit.

It’s not a coincidence that you took that many pics. When she passed us in the Solent, I took a whole bunch of pictures too, more than of any other ship (except for our neighbour HMS Ocean maybe).

I think the question is wether the decks were something like very dark brown or indeed dark grey. I asked because I’m building a model. She’s nearing completion, with dark grey main deck for now (I will most likely not change it if it’s proven wrong, but at least I would know it was wrong then) all the other decks are generally red as they normally are on this class. Main deck seems to differ on several of them.

Have you noticed how much she differs from the “normal” initial 7 Udaloy class?
First of all there is the broader helicopter deck, but something not noticed by many, is the “new box” just behind the aft Kinzhal launchers on top of the hangar. That box seems to carry some antenna and other pieces on top of it. There is also that parabola antenna next to the hangar on port side, maybe on starboard side too, it looks the same as the one found on the later Sovremennys, but I don’t have a clue what they serve for… Maybe internet or communications??? Strangely those antennae aren’t covered by the regular dome…

Well, I will bow to your superior knowledge of the alcohols of the world, especially given that I do not drink. Just as an aside, does anyone know if German ships are dry like American ones, or theoretically non-dry like UK ones?

Many years ago whilst i was at college studying electronic and computer engineering I did a months work experiance in a Brewery. :diablo:

Again, very nice photos Fed, though personally, I would not have gone for the German lager, Dutch lager is much better, same with Czech lager, mind you, there probably were not any ships from the Czech Navy there…

Carlsberg Export is my favorite but German was what was on offer. Sachsen was the second to last ship I went on that day and after pounding all over Portsmouth naval dockyard a very welcome and refreshing surprise. They were the only ship there doing this and I have to commend the German navy for the idea. They even set up tables and chairs on the helo deck so you could sit down and relax, it was made all the better by the fact that my friend was driving.

And finally the very welcome bar on the Deutsche Marine Sachsen. Had a lovely lager on the helo deck.

And now the rest, for some reason I took a lot of pics of the Udaloy. A couple of those red streaky images Im afraid and some model ships that were in the Lagoon if you can see them.

Harry, are there any plans to put barak on Mumbai? Without it the ship’s defences are incomplete.

Admiral Arun Prakash was quoted, saying that all warships would get the Barak eventually. It would be extremely strange to see them on the Talwars.

Ok, grouphug! :p

Dude, I would love to see Mumbai with Barak. I would also like to see some of the AK 630 taken off Delhi class recycled onto IN ships currently equipped with AK 230.

Fed: mate the Goalkeeper is a much harder hitting system than the Sea Zenith, GK is of 30mm calibre and the SZ is only 25mm. There are advantages for both but when it comes down to it, Turkey is the only operator of the SZ where as the GK has gone global (three countries actually produced it after all).

Can’t wait to see what is on the other film, should be good. I too have yet to convert to Digital. My trouble is that I have over $18k worth of equipment so I would like a camera that will be able to use my lenses that I already have.

You should be able to get a lense ring adaptor depending on what you use. Im picking the film up after work so I should be able to upload any interesting pictures tomorrow.

Fed: if you are contemplating the switch to digital, then I would recommend you make a first step, a while back I invested in a Fuji, and I was very satisfied. It was not one of the fancy digital SLR one, just a regular one (a very good one though), just 6MP, but all my photos came out real well. Best bit is that you can just keep taking photos, trying to the right shot – last time I used it, I would take four or five shots of everything rather than one or two, and when I get home, just pick the best one. A good first step into the digital realm though!

I suggest a day long visit instead of a look at the paintjob from a few pics.

Why, is it worse in person than in the pics? 🙂
Really, how is the build quality? Not just of the welding but also of the equipment…
