Inside Orient Thai's 747…

Recently a tour operator called Eastjet started offering dirt cheap flights from Stockholm to Bangkok. A return ticket could be had for less than €500.

Eastjet contracted Orient Thai Airlines for the flights, and off they went. Of course there were some slight delays here and there, and sometimes the elderly 747-100/200s made unannounced technical stops in Karachi on their way to and from Thailand.

Now, Eastjet’s reputation is quite damaged after a scandalous flight from Stockholm which departed some 27 hours delayed due to a rejected take-off and required spareparts had to be ordered from the UK, and of course a captain which apparently was drunk…

One of the passengers on an Orient Thai flight took a few photos of the interior – not sure if they were taken on this particular aircraft as it was an ex-KLM 747-300 and the one on the photos obviously is an ex-JAL or -JAA 747. But nevertheless I’d think twice before flying with this airline…

That was the point I was trying to make… 😉

Ahhh… My apologies. Your bright ginger glare put me off thinking properly, even though you’re about 4 miles away! 😀

Taken from the Code of Conduct on the first page:

Does anybody know if Orient Thai are still operating these ancient 747’s

Would you call that an appropriate “specific reason” for dredging up someone’s 4 year old rant about the state of an airline? I certainly wouldn’t!

It’s very misleading because poeple don’t always notice a thread has been bumped, so they may believe some of its content to be current which isn’t really a good thing. That’s why old threads tend to be left alone!

That is very true! I just read through about half the topic before I spotted the “2005” in the top left corner.

Easy mistake to make, i suppose, but in future it might be better to start a new topic and link back to the old one in your post.

I feel I probably should say something on topic, So…. One-Two-Go (part of Orient Thai) were grounded for a weeks late last year for maintenance issues. I imagine that is enough to ban them from flying from the EU, if they weren’t already!

Tell that to the moderators of this forum who usually lock very old threads who are bumped.

Taken from the Code of Conduct on the first page:

9) Prior to posting new threads the search facility should be used to ensure that the subject has not been covered before. Repeated threads on the same topic will be removed in extreme cases. Threads over 6 months old should not be resurrected without specific reason.

I once got ticked off for resurrecting a so-called Zombie thread that was all of a year old. Not long after I was similarly rebuked for not doing a search for an existing topic before opening a new thread. I take the point though about people maybe not realising the info has become out of date. Maybe we need something to automatically flag up any gap of, say, 6 months between posts?

I really think you’re being a bit anal about it.

Would you take a four year pause in a conversation with a friend? I suspect not! 😀

After four years a lot of information in threads can be inaccurate or simply false. It’s very misleading because poeple don’t always notice a thread has been bumped, so they may believe some of its content to be current which isn’t really a good thing. That’s why old threads tend to be left alone!

Well, once the girlfriend starts japping.

Actually, no I think she never quite made it to 4 years of continuous noise either.

I wasn’t aware that there was a time limit on threads

Exactly what I was thinking…

Lay it to rest!

Paul

I wasn’t aware that there was a time limit on threads

I was at Bangkok International a couple of weeks ago and saw a row of Orient Thai 747 parked up and was genuinely interested if they were still in service.

Sorry next time i’ll start a new thread

Not sure what the MEL says on the 747 but I would think that even a missing flashlight is a no-go item?

Well i dont think the CAA would even let them into British Skies, the missing Emergency Light is a automatic grounding here in the uk, I know of one BA flight to the Far East was Cancelled because of the battery was u/s, the better safe than sorry approach

747-200 MMEL allows operation with emergency flashlight and or holder assembly missing, provided the attendent assigned to that seat has a flashlight available. Flashlights/holders are a class “C” item and must be repaired/replaced in ten days (240 hours).

Its not just age that is a factor here. Just total neglect.

A spanking new 777 would soon look pretty shoddy if it was not serviced and valeted properly.
