Interesting News Snippets

Does anyone agree that there is a need for forum space to mention all those things that are of interest in the short term but, would not necessarily sustain a half a dozen or a dozen comments.

For example: Yesterday was the last day of the Six Nations rugby competition. Only of interest perhaps, to few on these Forums. I’d like to have placed a reminder but couldn’t find the last Six Nations subject, so didn’t bother.

Another example: Lord Neuburger, President of the Supreme Court mentioned that it was desirable that people should not be prevented from venting their often frustrated opinions on contentious issues for fear of condemnation. He thought that commentators who were opposed, were inhibited by the prospect of disapproval, from discussing rascism, homosexuality, ordination of females etc.

My Six Nations snippet was that it was a generally good result. Ireland won (by points difference) the Six Nations title from England. England won the Triple Crown and France was beaten ! Result.

Can anyone provide a sensible explanation for this conundrum ?

Two days ago it was announced in the Telegraph that the EU was arranging a deal with Turkey. Turkey would take deported immigrants from the EU, presumably to eventually return them to their countries of origin. In return, 80,000,000 Turkish citizens would not require a visa to the member countries of the EU.

In this outstanding example of ‘joined up’ EU thinking there is a flaw but, I’m darned if I can spot it !

I don’t know about ‘stale’ but it is certainly confusing!

Rather than have a large single ‘interesting news snippets’ thread (isn’t that what General Discussion is anyway) it would be better if people started new threads…

…the ‘ISIS / bombing Syria’ discussion is now going on in three separate threads simultaneously!!!

This thread is pretty stale. “Interesting News Snippets” is entirely misleading; “Boring, badly researched, and variously glib or fear mongering articles from the Daily Mail about immigration, ISIS or climate change” would be more accurate.

Speaking of the Daily Mail, I see that the top story at the moment is about Bangladeshi children making 20 pence a day sewing up jeans. The cynic in me wonders what they would be earning if they weren’t sewing up jeans? Possibly distasteful, but I doubt many children in Bangladesh have the luxury of an indulgent and care-free childhood. If they weren’t sewing jeans, what would they be doing?

Fair enough Brugg – and a worrying development. On the other hand we should be grateful that millions of people across the world access their news on the Internet. It is certainly my main source these days. So terrestrial censorship is not going to prove effective in the long run.

Yes I’d agree with that but my impression is that there was minimal reporting on live TV news.

There was no minimal reporting on live TV news, Charlie there was none at all, and one of my friends in Germany says this sort of thing is happening all over Europe we are just not being allowed to see it.

That most distinguished sketch writer and polemicist, Quentin Letts, has to-day in the Daily Mail, written a precis of his first book: “The Speaker’s Wife”.

Using the device of pen names and euphemisms, he examines the Establishment of this country and its descent into a widespread mediocrity.

For anyone who values this country and its once luminescent institutions, his analysis makes very uncomfortable reading. The abandonment of standards and values, the neutralising of shame, the furtive backhander, the carpetbagger dealing, all brought together to demonstrate in the clearest terms the decline of this once great nation.

Polish patriots?

More like polish nazi’s.
Not all of them of course, but it appears the more extreme right wing people……..

The majority were apparently demonstrating against the EU rather than specifically being an anti-immigration march.

The censorship is also untrue

Yes I’d agree with that but my impression is that there was minimal reporting on live TV news, although it was all over the Internet.

I wonder how true this is, they might be going to a football match for all I know.

With massive crowds as large as 170,000 strong, Polish patriots marched through their capital to demand an end to Islamic immigration — the “largest demonstration in Polish history.”

Poland isn’t just going to take the Islamization of Europe without a fight. They are sick and tired of letting their culture be stolen away from them…so this is what they did.

First check out this incredible photo:

Did you hear about this on CNN? You did not, because they completely censored it from American eyes, lest they be inspired to stand up against Obama’s sinister plans to import up to 200,000 so-called “Syrian refugees”, despite the FBI’s warning that the Feds can’t properly screen them.

Take a look at these articles from the BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-34525039

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33197308

Add up the individuals mentioned in those articles and you’ll see how soon you can get to the figure of 800 individuals that are ‘unknown’ to the Security Services. I don’t think that we should read too much into the fact that they are ‘unknown’; it doesn’t necessarily make them a secret army of ‘jihadists’…

…most of the ‘unknowns’ are probably children!

And why are they coming back? Well, probably because the ‘Islamic State’ hasn’t turned-out to be the paradise-on-earth they were anticipating…

…in fact, it’s a ******* awful place…..especially if you’ve just voluntarily taken your children there!

I bet Bradford doesn’t look so bad now does it! 😉

Sorry, the inference isn’t clear to me.

Are you saying that these ‘unknown’ people are not British citizens at all, but are actually ‘ISIS’ terrorists, being infiltrated into the United Kingdom?

Or are you simply saying that a large number of British citizens that have been to Syria to fight for ‘ISIS’ have done nothing in the United Kingdom to alert the Security Services to their allegiance, sympathy or support for ‘ISIS’?

Personally, I don’t think this indicates some huge ‘ISIS’ secret army; rather, it is an indication of the sort of deluded ‘wannabe’ who believes the ridiculous rhetoric about ‘jihad’! How often have we seen them on the news? Delusional teenage girls, disenfranchised young men, and women with their young children; do they really believe that the ‘caliphate’ is a suitable place to take children?

I think these are the ‘unknown’ people returning from Syria…..so that’s a good thing isn’t it?

CD

The 800 returnees were allegedly ‘unknown’ to our security people. The inference was that if one took an arbitrary figure of say, 10% which, in the circumstances strikes me as an underestimate but, I’m just guessing, and used that as a multiplier then the total of ‘unknowns’ could be about 8,000. I don’t think that that figure is at all unrealistic – could well be a lot more – and conveys some idea of the enmity felt by a substantial slice of the population.

I’ll rise to your bait ! As for anticipating my answer? You’ll most certainly be wrong. But then, that is perhaps something to which you’re accustomed.

I’m not by any means an uncritical admirer of the U.S. They are not a particular friend of this country nor is there any reason why they should be. As for the so called ‘special relationship’, permit me a hollow laugh.

What I do like is their robust response to those who want to attack and cause them harm. If jailing people for these crimes is necessary then who is counting the cost ? If they are in jail they are no longer a danger to your loved ones or mine. So, I’ll stick my hand in my pocket and pay a bit more tax to bring this about. I’d pay even more to see the Paris murderers locked up forever. Then I realised they’re dead – problem solved.

Its pretty certain that if you’re an offender you’d be streets better off being tried by a British court.

You are certainly more likely to be locked up, the US has a prison pop of just over 4.6 times the England and Wales per head of population. The figures for Scotland and NI are lower still

So, if we go down the route you seem to admire in the US, how are we to afford five times the number of prisoners? You always seem so keen for the UK to keep within it’s means.
Take money from the NHS? The Social Care Budget? Or Trident replacement perhaps?

I can anticipate your answer so give it a go and I’ll see if I’m right

Well, if I had to choose which country had a administration that had a better understanding of ‘justice’, the United Kingdom or the United States of America, I know which I’d choose!

I don’t know the details of the case but I do know he was extradited.
