Interesting Paintjob On A PT-22

http://forum2.aimoo.com/computerhelp/General-Discussion/Look-what-flew-over-the-Akron-CO-airshow-1-859252.html

Not sure it qualifies as historic for the paintjob, or the use (was a PT-22 ever used as a flying billboard before? ), but at least the airframe is!

I seem to recall that the FLY NAVY that appeared on the inside of Buccaneer bomb bays was a response to the politians wanting to get rid of carriers.

Back on topic, of flying billboards and banners. Were there ever warbirds used to tow banners ?

Yes. There’s a Bird Dog that tows banners near where I live on a semi-frequent basis.

I don’t want to turn this into a political debate either, but I think I can answer that question:

-Flying a warbird takes a lot of money
-In the US, if you have a lot of money, you most likely have your own (successful) business, most likely with employees.
–> if you have a business, I pretty much doubt you’d be a democrat (left wing) which is backing unions in every way they can, and try to add more and more government, while at the same time milking medium and small businesses dry.

Exceptions are movie stars, and some politicians. But most will fly a Gulfstream to go campaign all over the world against climate change 😀

That said, I agree that you fo to a show to see the planes, nothing else.

Every right indeed. I was refering to the right to one’s money back where one has paid to attend an airshow, not a rally.

There’s another thread here possibly, but one that’ll get stopped immediately, I suspect. What is it with aeroplanes and right wing politics, anyway? Oops, can o’worms.

Phillip, James: indeed.
As a good practice, I’d always suggest to link to the webpage where the photo is located, as this will quote your source at the same time.
If the photo is yours, and on a site like Flickr, then feel free to embed it, but please at a resolution that is viewable for most (1600×900 shots will just use viewers’ bandwidth without adding any viewing comfort)

No back to my original post, the message seems to have been applied with a sticker, so I suspect that the original scheme is intact. And I think that the pilot, as a private person, has every right to do this. After all, that’s what freedom of expression is for. Just like the Red Bull guys put their logo on all the planes they fly.

NOTE Not sure if we are allowed to embed photographs from other websites. Can a moderator please advise? I’ve done it before (copying image URL), but not keen on doing something not permitted.

Just to clarify my view – If the image is held on a photo hosting website, it’s not bandwidth theft (that’s what they’re for – although use your commons as to if lifting a shot on a macramé forum into international news interest may bust bandwith caps the owner/user is under). And secondly, as a researcher, writer and editor, I think it important to credit the source, so others can see what other’s work you are using, without thus claiming it as your own – as well as just where it is from.

Key may expect different, for good commercial or other reasons.

N82D was formally The Queen’s Flight and would look wonderful in her original QF paint scheme – even if the extra weight of her special paint reduced performance.

Agreed, though painting your aircraft must be safer than towing a political banner, isn’t that right Mr Farage…!

Nice. Not.

Then there’s the poor ex-RN Heron that’s been defaced with a list of Fox newsreaders.

Credit Al ‘Spooky the Cat’ from WIX. (The rest of that thread’s a lot more classy, thankfully.)

I also recall a L-39 when Bush was up for re-election carrying his campaign slogan at Osh, and further back Barry Goldwater’s details on a Reno Bearcat…

Funny that I (like most others) go to airshows to appreciate history and neat old airplanes.

The first one that becomes a political soap box will be the one where I walk up to the organizer and ask for my money back. And never attend again.
