Interesting Shot – Moths over Auckland 1931

This is an interesting photo I was given recently by a lady who’s father flew with the Auckland Aero Club in the 1930’s. This is from his album and dated 1931. It appears to be over Auckland.

The closest aircraft is obviously from the New Zealand Permanent Air Force (forerunner of the RNZAF). There was also obviously a fourth aircraft present, the camera ship. This must have been a really rare event to have four aircraft in the air at once and I wonder if it was perhaps the end of a long distance flight or something. Either way, it’s a great shot.

I think the two civilian Moths belong to the same aeroclub, Auckland, though I haven’t confirmed this. If they did, they probably registered them at the same time.
