Could well be from external storage. The pod element of the airframe is not of a material that likes the outdoors. Although Wellesbourne Museum seem to have coped admirably over the years with maintaining their example from the elements.
Picture’s taken here of Vampire T11 XD626 at the Midland Air Museum in April 2007 and show what happens to a pod that is given no/little care.

Looks pretty bad but Bruce would be able to comment on this one. Can you see the rippling in the fabric aft of the cockpit before he takes the fabric covering off?!
