International Cockpit Club

Hi all,

It is with regret that I have to say the annual web-hosting subscription for the International Cockpit Club expires next week and I will not be renewing it. That means that after 7 years the site will close.

The ‘club’ was established with all good intentions back in 2002 and I offered the founder help with building the accompanying website. Frankly, the club never really took off (no pun intended…Ok, maybe just a little one!) and he disappeared from the scene leaving the club as nothing more than a website and therefore a one-man show (i.e. me!) both for the maintaintenance and funding of it.

However a lot has changed during those 7 years and nowadays I simply don’t have the time to devote to the maintenance of the site. That means that updates do not get posted, new developments do not get made and, worst of all, many e-mails do not get answered which makes me feel especially bad and for which I sincerely apologise.

So, having thought similar thoughts for the past 2 years and having pressed on regardless, I think it’s now run it’s course and time to throw in the towel. Rather than just have the site disappear though I thought it best to notify you lot first as I know some cockpit restorers and forum members here also read the ICC site.

Most importantly though, thank you to everyone who has offered support and encouragement over the years and helped to keep the site running for as long as it has. Maybe it’s made a difference to the cockpit restoration hobby, maybe it hasn’t, I don’t know. If it’s the latter then please keep quiet about it and I can continue in blissful ignorance!

I will preserve the Cockpitfest section of the website as that much-loved event is still going from strength to strength and I’m determined to continue to provide as much support as I can for it. Other than that, if anyone else fancies taking over the ICC site then let me know and I will endeavour to help as far as I can.

Thanks again,

Mark

i hope i can get my project into the gallery of the new one.

You certainly can – we can never have too many Vampires I say! I just need a bit more time to get the old ICC gallery converted over to the new design. It’s quite a bit of work but is coming along steadily.

When it’s finished I’ll add instructions on how to get new projects added to the list (picture file formats, required text, etc.), so keep a close eye out!

Thanks again.

Ok, the new site, or at least the basics of it, is now live. The old ICC gallery has yet to be transferred but the Cockpitfest photos, links and a new forum is active.

It’s a very basic site now but is much easier to maintain.

It’s based around Cockpitfest as mentioned previously, but retains enough elements of the ICC to maintain the link between the two.

We don’t have the old ICC member’s directory any more but there is a “Roll Call” section in the forum which, I hope, people will use to introduce themselves and their projects. That way others will know who you are and just might be able to help out.

It has a new URL (no, not “Men in Sheds” DC!) – http://www.cockpitfest.co.uk although once the technicalities of the re-direction have taken effect the old http://www.internationalcockpitclub.org.uk address will take you there as well.

I hope it’ll continue to provide a ‘meeting place’ for cockpiters in the same way the ICC (sort of!) did. So please give it a go, otherwise all the effort will have been for nowt. 🙂

Lastly, but most importantly, a massive “thank you” to Bruce Gordon of Great British Aircraft Spares for donating the webspace to host this thing. Without his help this would quite possibly never have got off the ground. Cheers Bruce.:D

Thanks,

Mark

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone but, as you’ve seen, the current ICC site has now come to an end.

However, as there is clearly a desire for ‘something’ to replace it I have been working on a very much simplified alternative. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I was not able to get it finished and uploaded in time so there will be a short ‘interlude’! 🙂

As pagen01 suggested, it will basically contain the contents of the gallery from the old ICC, the Cockpitfest photos and reports, links and possibly an externally hosted forum to cover the sales/wants aspect.

The important thing is that it’s designed in such a way that it will be very easy to maintain. The design of the old site was it’s biggest problem as it was originally intended to support a ‘proper’ club. That meant there was a load of custom Perl and PHP scripts to handle usernames, passwords, dynamic pages etc., etc. which became time consuming to maintain. The new site is very much simpler and uses a basic content management system which means pages can be updated very easily.

So, many thanks again for your support and interest, the new site should be operating, even if not fully populated, in a day or two. 🙂

From Post #1, the subscription was due this week so it’s no surprise that it’s suspended.

Reading between the lines in earlier posts, I think that Mark is taking his time to review what is actually required/wanted and then see if it can be taken forward. I’m sure that whatever the decision it won’t be taken lightly

I’m really surprised this cannot be saved, at least in its web capacity.
All that is need is a fairly basic website with sales/wants, galleries etc, forum isn’t essential, but desireable, and blog would probably surfice.

The Cockpit collecting fraternity has surely never been stronger, and this is a great way for all to keep in touch, and to show the public what is out there.
It isn’t within the remit of Key forums to have such a dedicated section IMO.

Firstly, I’d like to thank Mark G for maintaining the ICC website for so long single handedly. He has created and maintained a focal point for all of our hobbies.

I became aware of the website around 2003. By the very nature of cockpit ownership, they are often privately owned projects, not usually on public display, and in several cases not showcased in the magazines we read. So having the ICC website and just embarking on my first Aerojumbles and starting to build parts of my project, it gave me a good place to meet owners of other projects through, and raise my awareness to others good work.

I would like to see the cockpitfest coverage (past and present) kept in some form on the internet, and also a sales/wants/suppliers section.

Everyone has expressed some good views and support here, but personally, I don’t think the web needs another forum as I know how much effort it takes to maintain one.

As for whether the world needs a Forum, then IMHO it needs the ICC one as it fills a gap that FP cannot or will not fill. in other words a free space where members can offer for sale/swap and request items. I am the first to admit that I haven’t the foggiest idea of how to create or even run a website, but a drastically slimmed down one wouldn’t I hope be an onerous task, although if cost is an issue, I can understand someone taking a deep breath before committing.

If someone wants to request information etc, then become a member and ask a question of the membership, that’s how other Forums work and should take some of the load off Mark.

Whatever happens, Mark should be appluaded for creating this resource in the first place and given us the chance to become the network of owners that we have become.
