International-US-International Connections

Hi all, apologies if this thread is not a very informative or interesting one, but I have a question that I am hoping some of you could clear up for me regarding international connections in the US/Canada.

I am travelling to Buenos Aires this winter from London, and many cheap options are with carriers such as Air Canada or United, which includes a stop over in Newark or Toronto. The connection time offered is little more than two hours, and my question is:

When international connecting passengers fly into US airports or Canadian ones, what are the procedures? I am assuming they have to transit as an arriving passenger, claim their luggage and check in again? Does this mean they also need a visa for entry? If so, then surely much more than 2 hours connecting time is needed- but if thats the case then the airlines should offer a wider connecting time!?

Many thanks, before booking I need to make sure what I’m flying into!

I’ve flown Auckland – Los Angeles – London and back several times and all I have needed is an ESTA: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/.

The transit time is only a couple of hours and most times I have had to clear immigration, collect my bags and return to the check in desk. This would have meant that I could have just walked out of the airport and gone where ever. I just put on my arrivals card that I was in transit.
