Internet connection without phone line

Can anyone tell me if you can connect to the internet without a phone line by using the following idea ?

Get a bluetooth mobile-phone and a bluetooth p.c. modem (if there is such a thing), use the bluetooth to link the mobile and modem together and then simply use the combination of bluetooth mobile and modem to dial up the normal ISP number.

I thought so 😉

But, if you urgently need e-mail while travelling, that is helpful.

Thanks for all the reply’s, looks like I wont be doing this as the speed and cost make it unworkable.

I think Arthur was being sarcastic…last time I checked I didn’t think you could get a workable data transfer rate over a natural gas line. The signal keeps fluctuating 😀

Unfortunately, the site is dead, but i worked with a few other people for an advertising-website for Internet Through Gas. Somehow, none of the replies we got was a serious one.

Something very similar was proposed by the main electricity provider in the North West of England quite a few years ago.

Nothing came of it.

They came up with this one in Amsterdam, right? :diablo:

You can get an internet-link via your gas connection here in the Netherlands. A modem hooks up your computer to your gas tap, and there you go. You can even cook and be on-line at the same time!

Yes, it is possible. You also have dedicated GPRS cards (PCMCIA) to put into a laptop (which is another solution)

Note that such technologies are SLOW, and expensive ! (A Cellphone used as modem is 9600bps if I remember correctly, opposed to the 56kbps a phoneline modem does)

The people I work for use this sort of set-up for out-of-office Internet and remote network access quite a lot.

Don’t know if it is available in the UK, but in NL Vodafone was advertising that setup.
