I’m getting really annoyed with my computer at the moment. For the second time it has done something which causes so much stress when using the computer.
When you type a keyword into the Internet Explorer address bar, you are able to search for webpages. In the past 24 hours, my computer has suddenly signed itself up with http://www.orbitexplorer.com/ and change some of my settings which I can’t seem to change back. When you search through Internet Explorer now, you get some useless new search engine being used opposed to MSN or Google.co.uk which is what I wanted. My home page was set to Orbit Explorer and I am getting many pop-up advertisements, perhaps 1 every 5 minutes which I am not happy with.
I’m the only one who has used this computer since the problem has occurred and I have not agreed to install any program or change any settings on my computer. The simple things like changing the home page back to a website of my choice is easily rectifiable, but as for putting a stop to the crap search engine which searches for irrelevant websites, it’s not budging.
How do I get rid of this rubbish (and the pop-ups)? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’ve also got a problem with my Internet Explorer. The thing is I open up Internet Explorer and a little box saying “no connection to the internet is avaliable” it also has two buttons which are “work offline” and “try again” whenever I press try again it dials up fine. The strangest thing is that it dials up fine on Outlook Express. Anyone know why this is and how I can fix it (as long as it doesn’t involve re-installing windows XP) ?

Another great site for computer problems- www.pcpitstop.com.
I would really recommend this site. Just do full system scan tells you everything you need to know including how to make your computer go faster and how good your system is. Also scans for viruses and spyware.

I am a little behind on the Microsoft operating systems, still using Windows 98 here and I have also experience the same problems as you have, Flood.
I was also getting several “illegal operations” being performed. This would happen if I clicked a link or something, when the page had not fully loaded. Extremely infuriating if you’re doing something worthwhile!
My solution was to simply re-install Windows but thats obviously a huge task and there is no doubt a simpler method of rectifying the problem you are experiencing!

I have since lost Internet Explorer.
It just suddenly went and now will do nothing except enquire if I would like to send an error message to Microsoft. It then enquires if I would like to send an error message… And will continue that until I Ctrl-Alt-Delete and close all the requests.
Lucky for me – but not for you;) – that I am on AOL and can default to the lousy (in comparison) internet thing there.
Any ideas?
Should I try repairing from the Windows XP discs?

Hi all,
Thanks so much for the help you gave me. Fortunately, with the useful assortment of links, I managed to locate a freeware program which searched my computer and found 240 files which were the cause of the problem. They’ve since been removed!
Everything is back to normal now.
Thanks once again,
Michael

Michael, i’ve had the exact same problems recently. At the moment I have one come up called ‘perfectnav’ and another called ‘mysearch’, neither of which I want. However, i have managed to get rid of them. Go to www.lavasoft.com and download a program called ‘ad-aware 6’. It will download and install quickly and easily, then all you have to do is run a search of your computer and it’ll find everything that ‘spies’ on you. As mentioned, this thing you have is likely to be GAIN software, and tracks all your computer records etc. Once ad-aware has found all the files, you simply delete them and that should be it! When it searched my pc, it found 819 spy-ware programs 😮 Now that they are all deleted, my PC works a whole lot quicker aswell. Hope this helps:D

Sounds very similar to a problem I experienced recently, namely a browser hi-jack, download and run CWShredder from www.spywareinfo.com, also highly reccomended for download is Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy, at least one of these utilities should help.
