pssst……you’re usually breaking the law if you do. 😎

usually but not always. 😉 you can go to sampling websites and download music files that are supposed to ‘self destruct’ or sth after a few days. strange but true.:p

My Mum works in a shop where they sell iPODS, and she suggested that I have one, because I love to listen to music and at the moment we only have the CD players and the CD drive on my PC to listen to music with. But I wouldn’t really be bothered, it is hell of alot of hassle having to pay to download music from the internet just to listen to on something like that. It is much more fun to buy a CD which includes a video of the song – I can listen to that on my own CD player, and watch the video on my PC. And you can’t watch Enrique Inglesias on an iPOD can you 😀 😀 ?

ipods? i think they are for people who either have no real opinion of their own (‘gee, im not sure what music i like so i’ll have it all’) or someone who is too greedy for their own good. 😀 (and no, thats not directed at you Grey 😉 )

Sorry about that, I wasnt being to clear. Anyway, I guess that the U.K. and U.S. situation adds a new variable but its just another thing you have to consider.

But the issue with the battery isn’t a matter of opinion or conjecture, ACA345.

It does become uselss, albeit after something like 300 charge cycles. All other lithium-ion rechargeable batteries do the same.

The battery is officially non user-servicable – which is in keeping with the Apple philosophy of providing comsumer “black boxes” – and Apple do charge for replacement. Currently the charge is $99.

You can extend the warranty on an i-Pod from one year to two years at a cost of $59 and this does include defective batteries.

Now, it is possible to buy a battery and replace it yourself but, as is customary with consumer electronics, the moment you open the case you’re on your own, matey! Even here, we’re talking $40 – $50 and you will have to take extreme care to avoid damage to the sensitive hard drive in the process.

As usual, by the way, it will cost more to do any of the above in Europe than in the States and still more for we long-suffering Brits. When I were a lad, companies converted currencies rather than just changing the dollar sign for a pound sign. 😡

But I digress……….

By all means buy an i-Pod, but be aware that at some point you will have to shell out a tidy sum to be able to continue to use it.

BTW, Flood, the iPod stores all of its music on a hard disk. If the battery is drained completely, or even removed, all of the music on the iPod will remain intact.

I thought your earlier question referred to user option settings. Sorry.

I do not have one myself, but I do know of many people I know that have it and I have had a spin on it. Very clever design and construction and I believe the pros outweigh the cons. Apple has done a very fine job with this unit and it is the best product in this market area. Yes, there are problems, like the battery, but it is nearlly impossible to find a product without flaws. Usually the stories you hear are from people who have had problems with it and are just miffed about it. The best thing to do, when buying electronics, is make your own decision based on information you collect and interpret for yourself. If you do not want too much risk you can buy and iPod mini, around $249 and it stores about 70 hours of music. Hope this helps-

But how will you know that the old battery is dead unless it doesn’t work anymore?

Since the battery has to be changed by the manufacturers (or by their appointed service agents) I presume that the information and settings would be backed up and restored once the new battery is in place.

Will all the info be saved when you change the battery?

The i-Pod is a nice piece of kit.

Not so nice when you find out how much it’ll cost you to have the internal battery replaced when it runs out, though……… 😮 😮 😮

I-Pod, a flash walkman that can store all the music in the world ever, ever !

As my mate said, “That’s gonna be one long feckin walk of the dog round the park.” 😮
