A poor quallity yet atmospheric shot of three of the Ipswich Austers taken in the mid 1960’s. The remains of the EAFS Proctor can just be seen on the extreme left hand side of the photo.

General shots of the airport and aircraft, that sort of stuff really, also maybe some of the airshows.
Many Thanks

Has anybody got any shots of Ipswich in the 70’s – 90’s? I would be very interested to see them if you have.
Silly question, but what sort of shots was you thinking of?

Looking at some pics from the great storm of ’87 were there any Austers damaged at the time?
No Austers where damagaed, but that was beacuse at the time there were no Austers resident at Ipswich
What was damaged was as follows:
Cessna 150 G-BDSC was written off when blown over into Harvard G-BICE which suffered wing damage.
Cessna 150 G-BABC was badly damaged (although repaired) when blown on to its back hitting Pa28 G-AVGD which suffered minor damaged.
Quicke G-BMVG was badly damaged (although repaired) when blown into Harvard G-JUDI which itself was damaged when blown backwards into a fence.
The black Dakota N4565L was damaged when blown backwards about 50 yards into an old building.

I have a pic of the black Dak with the cherry red lips somewhere.
Found it here from a couple of years back http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=27511&highlight=DC-3+ipswich+airport

Was the Tiger Moth G-ANKG? Below are a couple of photos. Not sure where I got them from, although the notes on the back say “DH82 Ipswich 58 after overhaul, crashed 59”. The other says “Crashed Ipswich Airport 59 – Stalled on turn on overshoot at 100ft”. Interesting other sources give the accident date as 11/9/58!
Martyn
I don’t know which Tiger Moth it was but whoever pranged it was never forgiven by members of the East Anglian Flying Club as it was never replaced. When I joined the club in 1964 I never heard the end of it and we had to make do with just Austers!!
Having said that, this one did seem to be the likely candidate – many thanks for posting.

I was under the impression that because there was a Royal Prince of Wales connection from the early 30’s when the terminal was opened that someone had ‘listed’ the buildings, I do know that they were left by IBC (??) in a dilapadated state, presuming the rebuild.
The terminal Building was grade 2 listed. Primarily because of it’s architectural importance in its type of modular design from the 1930’s and was the only remaining building of this type. Although the one at Exeter Airport still exists it has been heavily modified over the years.
It was supposed to have been “converted” as part of the airport site redevelopment, but after years of neglect by the council it was decided too far gone and was also (reportedly) riddled with Asbestos, so they said had to go. Although no one seemed to know about the demolition (including English Heritage) until it was well under way…..

1977-1996 in Ipswich, I attended most of the airshows and recall seeing the DC3 in black livery when they were making the film with Michael Caine.
The Black DC3 and the Michael Caine were different filming projects. The DC3 arrived 02/11/86 an was used on a German TV production in which it was arms running. Michael Caine was with the film Forth Protocol, although I don’t think he came to the airport as his filming took part down at the docks area. His aviation connection was the with two Bristows S-76A’s (G-BIPR & G-BISZ) which did visit the Airport. They flew in on 14/06/86 painted all black and on arrival were marked up as XZ172 & XZ197. They then spent the day being filmed flying under the Orwell Bridge and at the docks area with Michael Caine.

No, they just belonged to the local East Anglian Flying Club which was owned by Southend-based Channel Airways. The club did own a Tiger Moth at one stage but that was written off in the early 1960’s.

So what was the point of knocking the whole thing down and then re-building it?
Well wessex boy, probably for the same reason that my cat goes spraying urine about the garden. Also when people move into a new house they change the decor. And this is from a developer who sees cemeteries as legitimate sites for housing developments.
I hope other members of this forum will offer you the supposed reasons!

Many of us wish that it was a refurbishment. Unfortunately it is a reconstruction and so is a pastiche of its former self. No longer does an arrivals and departures hall exist.
Rogier
I did not know that the building had undergone total reconstruction, probably that is why the IBC put the Boards up so that we couldn’t see what was going on. 🙁 I was under the impression that because there was a Royal Prince of Wales connection from the early 30’s when the terminal was opened that someone had ‘listed’ the buildings, I do know that they were left by IBC (??) in a dilapadated state, presuming the rebuild.

Kev
The aerial pic of Ipswich Airport is almost covered with new housing, and shopping/recreational facilities, the area is totally unrecognisable apart from the newly refurbished Airport Lounge and Control Tower which had some preservation order put in place

I have a colour pic of Dr H Hamilton’s Auster G-AHBL from 1976 to contribute if only I had access to a scanner. Any offers?
