Hi, I’m looking for credible information on the Iranian Navy. I’ve browsed the internet and google earth for ages and still there are many blanks
Here are a few profile drawings I’ve done of Iranian Naval types:
Thondor Class FAC brought from China. 23mm AAA appears to be a local modification:
IPS-18 Tir class low-observable torpedo boat:
Submersible torpedo boat (Swim North Korean styleee):
Large patrol boat (refitted Royal yacht) with C-802 SSMs:
I have a few more drawings but I’m still in search for good photos of a couple of key units:
a) The Mowj corvette. I’m sure it’s sitting in Bandar Abbas harbour as I type but no one has ever taken a photo of it???
b) Sina class FAC, reportedly a reverse engineered Combattante II (Kaman class in Iranian service). Only pic I’ve seen shows a Combattante II with the hull number 224. Anything to substantiate its appearance/existance please 🙂
c) A missile armed version of the China Cat FAC. Only photos I’ve seen show an unarmed version in Iranian service.
Cheers in advance. With your help I can draw more pretty pictures 😀

The model that illustration was based on turns out to differ from the real ship in some details. Recently a video of the ship was released showing that the arment forward of the bridge consisted of two manned 20mm light AAA, one each side – um, hardly high tech lol. In the video the 76mm main gun has yet to be fitted and we don’t get o see the rear of the ship.
The video does show what looks like a fire-control set mounted atop the bridge though. The type looks very similar to that mounted on the Thondor class boats which, if I recall it right, is a Chinese Type 341 set. That is a set commonly used for gun direction…the Thondor using it to direct the AK-230 mount.
A fire control set like a 341 obviously is not there to serve a pair of manually laid light guns so it does lend credibility to the fact that something heavier is still to be fitted!.

well spotted. Actually that’s me highlighting them in MS paint by drawing over them. They are real, but they ren’t clear in the screen captures of the video because it’s too hazy.

Hi, excuse my ignorance but those four C801 boxes look like they were added in by the worlds worst photo shopper, perhaps i’m being retarded and have missed something here like the part where someone said there not real, i think maybe the original photo has been ‘touched up’ shall we say with the oblong launchers for claritys sake as to point out where they are on the vessel and the original photo had them unobscured?

I suspect that the item in between the Bridge and the 76mm might be a launcher for MANPAD’s. As for the Phalanx copy- to the best of my knowledge Iran never recieved Phalanx so I have no idea where they would have got one from, and I doubt that they have the knowhow to design one from scratch.
On a side note, this thing looks rather top heavy, it might not be but all the weapons seem to be mounted quite high up on the super-sructure.

Mowj:
No apparent SAM but CIWS in front of mast looks like a Phalanx copy.

SINA-I missile boat (reverse engineered Comb’II)
1 in service, 2 more building.
Identical to Kaman class (Comb’II) of which about 6 are active (4 assume inactive).
SSMs are C-802s, main gun is a reverse engineered OTO-Melara 76mm, rear gun is probably a Bofors 40mm (exactly as per the Kamen).
I’m surprised that they didn’t complete the SINA units with upgraded air-defences, and maybe 8 rather than 4 SSMs.

Peykan P224 is the first of the Sina1 craft launched on 29-9-2003. Same name and pennant no. as Combattante II class sunk in 1980 by Iraq. Two more of these vessels were building.
Here a pic of Peykan: http://www.diomil.ir/images/product/Original/mig/sina.jpg
This info from Janes FS 2005-06.

See my post above for pic of the Mowj model. no photos avbl on the net yet!
Also here is a link to an Iranian website listing some sparse technical details on the Moudge/Mowj and project Sina.

Would you like ice with that stone blood sir?
Mate in all seriousness, what you ask for is not the easiest to come by, over there they don’t even pretend to ask questions, they just shoot.
The only decent pic I could find was this one:

Hope that helps a little.
