Cadet
Townend ring? Pulled a bit of ally in a circle and the bashed the bejabbers out of the b*****d. Bit of tap and file and there you go. The 4 rear parts were a bit harder to form but basically the same skills required.
Avian, I think that I have some photos of the Cadet when we picked it up from Midland Aviation ( late Sammy Bruton’s company ) at Abbeyshrule, Co Longford in the early 80’s. We sold the aircraft to Derek Ellis and started the rebuild back at the workshops at Hamble, Hant. We rebuilt the fuselage up to ready for cover and the C/S / tail group. It was was a great project. Derek moved to North Island New Zealand and took the Cadet with him and got Stan Smith to work on the rebuild. There was a lot of work to be do on the wings / engine / cowlings etc etc etc. It just looks great.( Great Job Stan )
Will look out photos..:)

So how many ex-Irish Cadets are extant? Do EI-ALP and EI-ALU still exist?

Just thought I’d post a period shot for comparison

Thats good to hear Tony, sorry was only going on what was mentioned when I was out there last a couple of years ago, I think there was a mag issue then.

Stan I have seen it up close on visits to Baldonnell, loverly aeroplane that sadly does not fly very much. I dont think that the skills are there anymore to keep her well maintained 😮
Not so Matthew,we are there every Monday looking after our baby, just waiting for magnetos.Included in the group ( all ex Air Corps except me) is ex F/Sgt Brennan seen talking to Stan just after it was assembled at Baldonnel.

……are you sure that it’s not EI-ALP to which you’re referring, Blue Max? EI-ALU has, as far as I am aware, been earthbound for decades – and the last reference to it, of which I am aware, suggested that it was with ‘the Avro Trust’ at Barton.
p.s. on re-reading you post, Blue Max, I now realise that, probably, it was neither EI-ALU or EI-ALP about which you were taliking but a reference to EI-AGO/C7 instead!

Sticking with Irish Avro Cadets, can anyone enlighten me concerning the current status of the Avro 631 Cadet EI-ALU?

Beautiful work Stan! Do you have any photos of what you started with? Do you have any details of the Townend ring?
