Well, it no longer happens as Kai Tak has been closed for some time now. However, when it was operational, the approach to rwy 13 was not straight in because of a mountain. The pilots had to aim for a checkerboard on said mountain, and make a right turn more or less at the last minute and come in. Plus you had crosswinds galore given it’s proximity to the mountains and the ocean.

Why does all this happen at Kai Tak, is it in the middle of high pressure and low preasure all the time or something? are is it because its a hard approach?

I’m sure the same thing happened to that NCA pilot for the engine strike.

I think the blasting off the tail with dynamite, adding another two figure sum in millions to the rapair cost also played a part.
Either way, I’m willing to bet the skipper got his pink slip for that.

And just FYI, that 742 was repaired and last I saw, still flies for LH
Not suprising, considering it doesn’t look too beat up in that pic. Good thing it stayed on land. I think the only reason the China Air 744 was a write-off was due to the corrossion from it sitting in the salt water for a day or 2 until they could fish it out of there. Otherwise, they probably could have fixed it. I’m pretty sure I read that somewhere.

That China Airlines 744 was only 3 months old at the time the Captain dumped it into the drink. It was a total write off.
As for the LH 747, that was actually a revers thrust and break failure. The landing itself was sound. I know because I recently read a report on it. Something to do with the hydraulics.

The best part about the 3rd photo, is the bird taking off in the background. 😉 Old school colour scheme.
I was this close to flying into Kai Tak when it was still open. My old man and I had this trip in the works, and then something came up. 😡

Which one is the Alitalia?

Nothing wrong with that. I am quite enjoying this visual cornucopia about Kai Tak.

Man, you seem to be infatuated with Kai Tak

I agree, Dutchy. He is flying (no pun intended)! Looks like the landing at the end of “Airplane!” I don’t think the phrase from the name of the thread ‘is going to…’ applies to that last picture of the LH 747 but rather ‘already did…’ would be more appropriate. 😀

That Alitalia plane seems to be going a bit too fast if you ask me. But then perhapse my mind is playing tricks with me.
