Is Sandy Topen still around?

Im starting to research the history of my Auster AOP.9 WZ679.

A big thanks to Lee Howard for pointing me in the right direction and starting me off.

There is some confusion as to whether this AOP.9 airframe or another was with Sandy Topen at Cranfield.

Is Sandy still around? if so does anybody have any contact details so I may contact him about this part of my airframes history.

Many thanks in advance

Martin

i can understand wanting to turn it back to a swiss spec, But you gotta admit, the short nose type look gorgeous, where as the swiss nose does look a little odd,
I hope you didnt bin the short nose ??

No, I still have the short nose, and have other plans for it!

He definately used to have them at the Lincolnsfield site at Bushey from 82 – 86, used to be a US Army camp & they claimed it was where Glen Miller spent his last night alive. I used to go to Queens School next door & decked a kid for lobbing cricket balls at the airframes.

I am a bit confused so can someone please clarify. Was Wrecks and Relics wrong to list the Sandy Topen airframes under Bushey or were they kept at a site near his home there as some of the info posted gives conflicting information. Thanks.

I was hoping for a report of a physical sighting of the aircraft.

Planemike

Anybody able to confirm that it is at Widmerpool, Nottinghamshire, as it was last noted as being there in 2003/4.

I’ve changed the short nose back to a Swiss nose now, and have just completed a full airframe survey ready to get stuck in.

I think we’ve gone a bit OT!

Cheers for the help and advice given guys.

As ever much appreciated.

Only thing I really knew of Sandy Topen was of the lovely Vampire T.11 & Suez striped Venom he had on the display circuit. I used to lust after them as a child.

The Venom, sadly wont be airborne again, being time expired.

On the plus side, it is my current museum ‘toy’, and I’m looking to return it to its original condition, less Suez stripes!

Sandy initially had his collection called ‘Lincoln Field Vintage and Historic Collection’ just near Bushey. He then moved to Cranfield and then onwards to Bruntingthorpe.

Sandy topen

Sorry can’t help with whereabouts of Sandy Topen but if it is any help my 1984 edition of Wrecks and Relics records Auster AOP9 XK416 ex 7855M/G-AYUA as being with Sandy Topen at Bushey together with an unidentified
AOP9 frame.

Bushey is/was his home, not where he kept any aircraft

sorry, don’t know if he is still about.

I believe he tried to get back onto bruntingthorpe about 3 or 4 years ago maybe longer.

didn’t happen tho………..too much history
