On the little bits of info i have on this aircraft the A-50 sounds like a decent machine compared to an F-5E. It’s got an APG-67 radar, a decent thrust-to-weight ratio, higher max take off weight (not a good thing but it might indicate higher weapons load or fuel), a similar number of pylons (but I’m not sure what the A-50 is cleared to carry).
My question is for all you tech buffs and aerodynamic nutters is: is the A-50 comparable to the F-5E/F in terms of performance (i.e. maneouvrability, weapons load), range and other like indicators of fighter performance?
And as such is the A-50 a suitable replacement for the F-5E?
And furthermore is there a need for such an aircraft? It has a lot of US componenets so could only be sold to US friendly countries. But I don’t see many likely customers other than the UAE and maybe Greece to replace T-2’s and Israel (one day) to replace TA-4’s.
There are a lot of F-5 operators out there but many of them such as Honduras, Morrocco, Mexico and even Brazil can’t afford to replace them, so are opting for upgrades. Others such as Saudi Arabia will probably acquire a more high tech replacement. And others such as Iran are no longer considered as friendly. The US could’ve been a potential user but chose to upgrade its ageing T-38’s.
